Good Food, Lousy Service, Great Location

I think the headline says it all. Jackson Square is great and the view out the window wonderful on a sunny, breezy, May day. The food was ok but not outstanding, with the crawfish etouffee gaining some flavor with the addition of some hot sauce. The service, unfortunately, was some of the worst I have ever encountered (and I have 25 years under my belt). My waiter was more interested in smoking (two breaks out the from door during my meal), reading the paper in the dining room, and running his jaw with the other staff. He checked how my appetizer was, after I finished it and was waiting for my entree (which took an overly long time - I think he forgot to put the order in - wonder why!). He never did ask how my entree was. I was hard pressed to even leave 10% - and I normally start at 20% and go from there. I even left exact change. Not the best experience - go to Cafe Maspero and eat at the bar with Debbie (even on a Sunday she was ten times better!).

I stopped here for lunch on a weekday with some friends. The menu focuses on Cajun fair -- gumbo, shrimp, etc. -- along with more straight forward fare such as baked chicken. In my opinion, the food was passable, but nothing to write home about. I ordered the shrimp etouffe and found it was mild and boring. Our total bill was not cheap -- about $20 per person for a lunch that included a soft drink and main course.

OK, what can you expect when you're on the plaza -- overpriced tourist traps. Go for coffee if you must visit Cafe Pontalba. The food is not worth the price (in my book).

Do not listen to Zagat's. It's obvious to me, whoever wrote the latest review on Cafe Pontalba's, actually never ate there. This place is wonderful. The wait staff is laidback and friendly, the bartender is open to new drink ideas, and the food is great. It's one of the only restaurants in Jackson Square, and is open to the sights and sounds of everything the French Quarter has to offer.
