Rangoli

One of the things I enjoy doing with my daughter is having Indian food. A lot of folks have raved about Rangoli, calling it the best Indian restaurant. Rangoli specializes in Southern Indian cuisine with lots of vegetarian choices.

The samosas were just perfect, and not too spicy; they are wonderful flaky crust turnovers with a choice of potatoes and peas or hare peas and green beans. They were part of the assorted fritters appetizer we ordered. You also get two pakoras, which are onion and potato fritters.

I do that to my chicken biryani , not because it needs to be subdued, but just because of the awesome taste. We always order a side of raita as we enjoy dipping our poori or Naan bread; sometimes we have both. The menu has appropriate remarks if a dish is too hot, or may contain "exotic" spices. We don't usually do the curry circuit because we find there are so many other tasty ways to go. Basmati rice, a long grain variety, is always served to temper the meal; they make an excellent Kofta, loosely translated as a meatball, but use vegetables instead with nuts and served in a mild gravy. Saag Paneer is also very mild; composed of spinach and white cheese cubes, it tastes great when you scoop it and pour it on top of your rice!

A wonderful idea, if you find the vegetarian selections too numerous and appealing at the same time, is to have the Vegetarian Combination plate which will give you a taste of the most popular dishes and is served with bread, raita (the yoghurt mixture), lentils, and Basmati rice.

You will not find any biryani dishes here, but a close cousin would be the "khorma" preparation, which includes cashew nuts and mild spices. The best part of the meal is always last, and Michele and I never miss it. We go for the southern variation of the "ras malai" which is called Gulab Jamun, though not as sweet and has rose water in it. If you like Ricotta cheese, this will make you happy. Also, the homemade ice cream, or kulfi, is always excellent. Try the saffron if it's available.

No better way to end the meal than with Bengal spice tea; also available is Darjeeling, which you can have with milk, or the real mccoy Chai! The yogurt drinks are quite refreshing, especially on hot summer days. The mango flavored one is my favorite.

Rangoli has take out service, which is terrific and convenient for people on the go. They take major credit cards, but no checks. If you go to their website above, you will see that they own two other restaurants in the Boston area.
