I have been raving about the beignets since visiting New Orleans about 10 years ago on business. When we first sat down, I told my wife that I would order 2 orders of beignets for us. She said that would be too much noting the size at other tables. I said, "Trust me". Before we were through, she said she was glad I didn't listen to her. Just as delicious as I remembered.

This is a must stop for all. Cafe Du Monde is busy all day long. It is worth the short wait for a table. Sit and enjoy the Beignets and Cafe Au Lait while people watching. It is a great place to take it all in.

No trip to New Orleans is complete without coffee and beignets at Cafe du Monde. They have a location in the River Walk, but everyone should stop at least once at the location near the French Market.

Sweet, Sweet Beignets: Cafe du Monde

Cafe du Monde is a fixture at the southern corner of Jackson Square in the French Quarter. It serves basically two things: beignets and coffee. Beignets (benn-YAYS) are a French variant of the donut, deep-fried and powdered with sugar, and, quite frankly, the most amazing dessert ever created.

The coffee served here is blended with chicory. This ground root adds a pleasant, nutty flavor to the coffee, which you can get plain or au lait. Hot chocolate and other cafe beverages are served . . . but forget that! BEIGNETS, MAN! HAVE ONE! HAVE FOUR! For less than 10 bucks, you can sit in this crowded, noisy, pigeon-ridden outdoor cafe and have what is sure to be one of the transcendent eating experiences of your life. GO NOW.

This coffeeshop on Decatur Street in the French Quarter is a New Orleans institution. The cafe is open 24 hours a day 364 days a year (it's closed on Christmas). Personally, I'm not a coffee drinker, but this coffee has chickory in it, which makes it quite different. Don't drink too fast as the coffee is normally very hot when it arrives at your table. Be sure to order some beignets (squares of dough that are fried and covered with powdered sugar); a serving is three beignets.

Across the road from the café is the Café du Monde store, where you can buy the coffees, beignet mixes, and other little delights, including my favorite, fudge; the coffee and vanilla fudges are a treat for any sweet tooth.

It can get very busy, so chances are you'll have to stand in line. Also keep in mind that they dont really have a menu, there are no entrees and appetizers, its pretty much just coffee and beignets.
