Highly Recommend This Restaurant

Over three days, I had dinner, a late lunch and a sandwich (at a special Wolfgang Puck booth set up for the dragonboat festival) and everything was better than I expected, at a reasonable cost. My friend is a sushi fan and she raved about the sushi.
I would highly recommend this restaurant.

If anyone was to be crowned the king of multitasking, it would be chef Wolfgang Puck. He oversees an empire that spans the food landscape: takeout dishes, frozen foods, a chain of pizza restaurants, several award-winning restaurants in Los Angeles (including his signature establishment, perennial favorite Spago) and dozens of other ventures worldwide. Puck’s Disneyworld location represents his interests in all their glory by presenting four distinct restaurants in one space: an upscale dining room; a sushi bar and lounge; a casual café; and Wolfgang Puck Express, the chef’s takeout line.

Wolfgang Puck's Cafe

I decided at Wolfgang Puck's cafe just because that is one of the restaurants I haven't been to at Downtown Disney. To be honest, it kind of intimidated me. Big name chef usually means high prices. But I figured I would give it a try.

The exterior of the restaurant is semi-modern. That's the best way I can describe it. Multi-colored tiles surround the door and there is an outdoor seating area if you want to eat outside. When you walk in, you see an open air kitchen which is great to watch. There's a large stair case which leads to the dinning room which opens after 6pm. The cafe downstairs has a bar in which you can sit and watch your meal being made. It also has a fresh sushi bar and multi-layered seating areas with booths and tables.

The staff is very helpful. The hostess brought me to my table. And my waiter was very kind. He, I sadly do not recall his name, was great. He asked a question that I had never been asked before—do I have any food allergies. Even though I don't, I thought this was a great question.

I ordered a Chicken Panini (which came with french fries) and a Cosmo for lunch. The Cosmo is to die for. Also included in lunch is fresh bread that tasted like it had basil baked in it. It also came with olive oil for dipping. The total cost came to about $22 which is a little higher than I normally pay, but it was a great change of pace.

I would recommend this place at least once.

Ol’ Wolfgang saved us from starvation and frustration the first night of our 2005 trip. We had no preferred seatings arranged in advance (bad traveler, very bad, but we arrived hours earlier than we expected). We strolled up to the Brown Derby in MGM at about 8pm and found out the bad news. That’s when I programmed Preferred Seating (800-WDW-DINE) into speed dial. By the time we had made our way to our car, we had a Wolfgang rescue dinner arranged. The nice lady who spent this half-hour on the phone tracking down an opening is the source of the advice about 3pm and 4pm seatings in theme park restaurants.

Anyway, I prefer Wolfgang's downstairs restaurant. The upstairs is a little more party-like. You can get all the same food downstairs if you ask. Wolfgang Puck is a notable exception to the Disney trend to dumbed-down ethnic food, but I don’t need to tell you about his creativity. I suspect that most of the places in West Side Downtown Disney are similar. His pizza is good, and the kid's menu is one one of the best you'll see. I like the sushi because they often have specials that are unusual. My better half always orders whatever the special is, and always goes into food ecstasy.

This was the best food I have ever had, pricey but incredible. Words cannot describe it. They have a great sushi bar, too! Steaks are great there, and their heirloom tomato salad is to die for. Yum!
