This neighborhood favorite is a great kid destination. Why? Ask your waiter to turn on the lights and he or she will yell "Lights!" Someone in the open kitchen will then saunter over and flick on the switch for the huge sign spelling "Zza's" in hundreds of red and white bulbs! The whole restaurant changes color (and temperature), kids will smile and adults are requred to clap and cheer.
The atmosphere is downhome and friendly, as though you'd been there before. They hold annual sweatshirt design contests and if you provide them with a photo from a trip of you wearing their sweatshirt, you'll get a free entree!
The cuisine is California-Italian - what's that mean? few heavy, meaty traditional Italian dishes. Instead, things like sun-dried tomatoes and goat cheese on escarole are available. Great wine list, and don't dessert!
You may have a short wait, but don't bother making reservations.
