Many years ago a friend and I happened across this place when we were exploring Chinatown. Curious as to the sort of fare a Chinese bakery offered, we decided to take a look. We were amazed at the variety of delectable treats offered. While the majority of items are traditional Chinese pastries, they also have meat-filled buns and elaborate cakes and pastries that would seem to match a French bakery. Some of the more traditional Chinese pastries are egg custard, red bean paste cakes, and fried sesame balls. My all-time favorite is something called a Butterfly Cookie, which is rich, buttery phyllo dough sprinkled with sugar and formed into a sort of butterfly shape. I can never eat just one, either. On my recent visit, I also tried the Coconut buns, which are slightly sweetened buns filled with a sweet coconut paste. I also got a Coconut pie, which looks like a turnover, filled with coconut paste and sprinkled with sugar. If you’re in Chinatown and in need of a sugar fix, the bakery has a small back room with a few tables and chairs where you can purchase a pastry and drink and eat it on the spot. This place won’t break your budget, either: most items are well under $1.
