Caffe Greco

Caffe Greco

Caffe Greco, a well-known North Beach fixture, is a pleasant café with a seating area that spreads over two rooms. Like other North Beach cafés, this place has tables on the sidewalk. They serve a nice range of coffee, cappuccino, latte desserts, and sandwiches. If you are looking to have a cup of the famous Illycaffe, this is the place to come. They basically served about six different kinds of sandwiches on foccia bread. I had a mozzarella and tomato sandwich and was very pleased with it. This is an ideal place to relax, have a nice long cup of coffee, kick back and read newspaper, or write those postcards that you have wanted to send for a long time. The staff in the café is very friendly, and I noticed that, unlike the other Italian cafés that played Italian pop/modern music, this café played Spanish music.

Caffé Greco

Caffé Greco, with a Greek name in the Italian district, run by Mexicans, offers Italian coffees, vino, paninis, handmade tiramisu, cannoli, and focaccia sandwiches. European newspapers are available to read. We selected Brasiliana, a slice of chocolate cake soaked with espresso liqueur, with a cream filling, and we were very favorably impressed with our dessert selection. The milk wasn't nearly cold enough, so I asked for some ice to chill it down. Internet access is available for a fee.

Caffe Greco serves the best cappucini and caffe macchiati this side of the Atlantic. They use Illy caffe, and every barista there knows how to work the expresso machine perfectly, right down to making the heart-shaped pattern on the top of the milk froth.

They also serve many great desserts and gelati. Those looking for a light meal can order an insalata caprese or one of their many focaccia sandwiches. But the highlight remains the coffee.

There are other decent cafes around- the neighboring Caffe Puccini, Steps of Rome, etc. But personally, anytime I am in North Beach and in possession of $1.65, I head to Caffe Greco for a caffe macchiato.
