Villa María

In a very nice part of town. Without reservations we waited 30 + minutes for a party of four.

The interior is reflective of the Mexican heritage, with cute slogans in Spanish (the one I remember is "my wife doesn't like me when I drink, and I don't like my wife when I am sober").

The drink specialty is a margarita served in a giant martini glass. Their version of the margarita has a local addition that changes the color slightly, but makes for a nice change of pace.

I had the steak cutlets and they were acceptable. One person in our party had the fish dish, (I think translated it was fish veracruz). He could not stop talking about it. One of the best dishes he has claimed to have had outside his family kitchen.

Villa Maria is in every guidebook, and deservedly so. Aside from the excellent Mexican food, the whimsical sayings (in Spanish) on the walls and mariachi band make this a must-visit. Something to watch out for is that they close at 7pm on Sundays.

To start, the margaritas are huge. When they bring it out, you start wondering why they're bringing around a fishbowl before you realize that it's your drink. At about 2 pints (500mL) in size, it'll last you the whole meal. If you want something smaller, remember to ask for it.

Menus are available in English, and most of the food there is suited for sharing. The chef's recommendations are all excellent, but if you can't handle spicy food, make sure to let them know.
