The very popular high-tech open-air cinemas open their gates in July and August. Prominent addresses are Rathausplatz in the city center, the Kino unter Sternen 'Cinema under stars' in the Augarten Park just two stops on the tram away from the city, and the horse racing grounds, Krieau, in the Prater. A main reason why these film festivals are so popular amongst Viennese is that they are always linked to an improvised beer garden where food and drink from all over the world is served. Rathausplatz can get quite hot during the day, but during the film performance after sunset (operas and concerts of superb quality), even low budget travellers can afford a cool drink since there is no entrance fee.
