Beauty's is a "Montreal institution", our host explained. This
old-fashioned style 1950's diner located north of the Latin Quarter and Downtown at the corner of Mont Royal West and St. Urbain has been
voted the "best brunch" in Montreal for many years. The restaurant was started in 1941 and still retains the 1950's decor with the chrome and plush booths. It has apparently also retained its popularity since there was a line out the door when we arrived (mostly because there is nowhere to wait inside). The booths hold two to six people and there is also a counter for people dining alone to eat. Apparently, local celebrities are often seen dining here.
The menu is standard breakfast food in large quantities. My friends enjoyed their omelets and pancakes. I was much less impressed with my waffle and two strips of bacon (for CDN$8) since I could have popped those too out of the freezer and into the toaster myself for a lot cheaper. The consensus seems to be that people come to Beauty's for the atmosphere not the food (although adequate). The wait staff is generally friendly (if a bit busy) and the they also have some specialties such as smoothies and coffee drinks with ice cream in them.
We parked at a
metered spot on St. Urbain. To get there by public transit, take the
metro to the Mont-Royal station, then take the
11 or 97 bus west (or start from the St-Laurent station downtown and take the 55 bus north on St-Laurent Blvd to Mont-Royal Ave).
