Le Petit Saint-Benoit

Le Petit Saint-Benoit is an old Paris restaurant dating back to 1901. The interior seems original right down to the old tin ceiling and mirrors with the silver peeling off the back. But don't let this fool you. The food is wonderful. The daily menu is handwritten, then duplicated using the old dittomaster method of the 1960s. Your order is taken, then written on the paper table cover. The servers are efficient, moving quickly to serve many tables, no wasted motion.

I ordered steak tartare, easily the best I've ever had; a delightful melange of flavors...rich, deep, and subtle. My wife had the escargot appetizer and again, the best she'd ever had; garlicky with a soft earthy background flavor. She also ordered the Camembert salad... green leaf lettuce and tomatoes with the traditional creamy yellow dressing and Camembert on toasted French bread.

For dessert, we shared what is called "Fondant au Chocolat Noir". It is best described as a sliver of very rich chocolate fudge with a creamy vanilla sauce, to die for!!! With a beer and a coffee, the total came to €31.50, about $40 at the time. There were no credit cards in 1901... and they still do not take them.
