Breakfast is very ordinary, but don't miss the black ham on a biscuit--wow. Go on a weekday for smaller crowds, but you'll still have to stand in line. Efficient, impersonal service, but it works.

If you like Southern food, you'll enjoy Mother's. It's all Southern with a Big Easy twist here. And while some New Orleans restaurants practically make you get a second mortgage on your home to pay your bill, Mother's is more than reasonable. In fact, it's downright cheap. We ate there for breakfast.

Hop in line and order cafeteria style from one of the attendants wearing paper hats behind the counter. Have a buttermilk biscuit with dirty grits or scrambled eggs with some greasy bacon. If you get coffee, you'll have to walk up yourself for refills.

After you pay, grab a table quick before they're all gone. A waitress will call out your name when your food's ready. Sit down and amuse yourself by looking at all the celebrity pictures on the brick walls. Apparently Republicans and Democrats both get hungry. You'll see signed snaps of Dan Quayle and Al Gore hanging amidst the mugs of famous athletes and a myriad of actors. One thing I also liked was the military wall where pics of marines have a special place of honor. I wondered if the owner was one of the few, proud, and brave.

Bottom line? This is a good place to stop for budget eats when you don't want to get dressed up for a fancy-smancy restaurant.

This was my favorite resturant in New Orleans. It was almost like the "Soup Nazi" episode of Seinfeld. You wait on line for them to "allow you" into the resturant. Then, you have to go directly to the line inside to place your order. They have a big chalkboard-like menu for you to look at. Then, you place your order, and move down the line. You have to be quick, though, or they'll tell you how slow you're going! After you place your order, you move down the line, and they prepare your food for you and put it on your tray. Then, you pay for your food, then you go to the bar for your drink. And God forbid if you sit down before you have your food and paid for it! They'll make you get up!

The food they serve is typical New Orleans fare. Po' Boys, grits, beans, etc. It's a greasy-spoon diner, New Orleans style.

Talk about yummy and you will be talking about Mother's. I had Baked Spaghetti Pie with black eye peas and green beans ($8.50) and never tasted anything so good. I was so full from the large portion I could barely waddle back to our hotel two blocks away. My boyfriend had the Po Boy with debris (all the stuff that falls off in the gravy during roasting) costing only $6.50 for the regular size. Don't sit down to look at a menu, this place is small and very busy. Bring a healthy appetite because there is no doubt in my mind why its called Mother's, since you sure get fed like its your mothers house.

World famous Po' Boys! We strongly recommend the catfish, shrimp, and Famous Fergi Po' Boys. The homemade tartar sauce is fabulous. The sweet potato pie also gets a high recommendation.
