Local Secrets, Big Finds 2007 Pick

Rustic rules at this "actual barn" that is known as "the best steak place in town." Walk into the lobby during winter to enjoy the "large fireplace" or take a look at the gift shop, then dig into a menu with "awesome food and a good wine selection, too." The "great service" makes it "worth the drive," and if you’ve got a designated driver, be sure to step upstairs to the Wild Turkey Lounge for a nightcap and dessert. On your way out of the barn, "barrels of fresh red apples are by the door waiting to be taken home with you."

After not having visited the Angus Barn in over 20 years, I was pleasantly surprised with the atmosphere old and new. They have added to the dining room, but it still is cozy and comfortable. The Barn is one of those places where you can be celebrating a special event like your anniversary or having a business meeting with clients. The staff are all courteous and extremely attentive. They make sure that everyone is well taken care of during their visit. From the moment you walk in you know that you have come to a truly special restaurant. The Wild Turkey bar is decorated to match its name. I have never seen that many turkey's in one place, human and otherwise...

For your dining pleasure, they provide you with a relish tray, cheese, and crackers to enjoy while you look over the menu. We had steaks and I was very pleased with the way everything was cooked...perfect to order. The steaks melted in your mouth. I had a spinach salad with warm bacon dressing which was wonderful as well.

After we comfortably ate our dinner they offered up a wonderful dessert tray with at least 10 homemade choices. We had the blackberry cobbler, which was like grandma used to make.

I highly recommend the Angus Barn to anyone. It is well worth the trip. I plan not to wait 20 years to visit it again.

Angus Barn

The Angus Barn is an upscale steakhouse, with prices to match. But...service is absolutely impeccable, and the food is perfect.

As you can discern from the name, their specialty is beef, and they do it VERY well. I have never been disappointed with my meal, and have NEVER had to send something back to be cooked the way I like it (and I'm fussy about my steaks).

If you are interested, they also have an excellent wine menu to complement your meal. Deserts are also wonderful, if you can manage to save enough room for them.

Although this is a busy place, the service is always great (they have plenty of wait staff.) They are attentive without being overbearing, and will do anything to please you.

The atmosphere is not stuffy, but relaxed and friendly. A great place for a business dinner, and also for a special romantic meal with your sweetie.

If price is important to you, don't eat here, but if you are looking for a perfect dining experience, this is the place. One of the few restaraunts that I would give a 5 star rating EVERY time I've been there. Visit their website for more information at www.angusbarn.com

The Angus Barn first opened in 1960. After a fire, the restaurant was rebuilt in 1965. The unique barn-like atmosphere beckons arrivals to Raleigh with beauty and world renowned style. Each entree is specially seasoned and prepared by master chefs and delivered in hearty portions. Service is the hallmark at the Angus Barn along with signature steak and prime rib. Also located in the restaurant is the Wild Turkey Lounge where one can enjoy great drinks. The recommendations of a most gracious staff will continue all the way through the meal to dessert--an absolute must!

I have to begin this by saying I wish I could give a higher recommendation than highly recommended. Before I talk about dining, I want to mention service first. The Angus Barn requires its employees to be very customer-service oriented, extremely polite, and professional. We went to dinner on a Thursday night and the place was packed, which is something the staff is used to, but some of the people in my group were amazed at how busy it was. The waiter was very courteous and humble. It prompted a conversation among us and we were told of one time that a guest from Winston-Salem (an hour and a half away) was too sick to drive home and a server was directed to drive him. The staff is empowered to do whatever it takes to make sure you are having the ultimate dining experience.
With all that as a preface, you can only hope that the food is remarkable and I can assure you that it is. Now you'll find it quite ironic that a vegetarian would even go to The Angus Barn, known for its steaks. However, I did have choices and I got the vegetarian plate (there's also pasta). Munch on cheese and crackers with some wine (and there are many from which to choose), but try to save room for the main course.
I enjoyed my vegetables and rice, all subtly seasoned, but enough to be tasty. I can also assure you that everyone in my group enjoyed every appetizer and every bite of their food. They ordered seafood, steaks, salads, fine wines, and more. Dessert was divine and the Chess Pie is award-winning.
We were treated to a tour of the Wine Cellar after dinner. It contains more than 35,000 wines (over 1,100 selections). The Angus Barn is recognized as having one of the top 100 wine lists in the world.
All I can say is The Angus Barn is a MUST.
