Their menu items are best described as American barbecue with burgers, steaks, ribs, and chicken the main entrée offerings. With a nice selection of appetizers along with the usual accompaniments such as baked beans, coleslaw, french fries and topped off with homemade cobbler, you have a complete dining experience. For those not interested in the barbecue type meal, they also have several pasta and seafood options. And if you can’t decide, why not try one of their many combination platters? You know you’re eating good southern home cooking when you see ribs, fried catfish and roasted chicken on the menu!
When we arrived, we ordered beverages and an order of their house specialty, the fried mozzarella sticks. At $8.99, we felt they might be a bit over priced for just five, but they were larger than the normal ones you may see at say Olive Garden, and had much better flavor. We did notice that there were a lot of tables enjoying the "onion loaf" which is essentially stringy onion rings. There are dining coupons in the local travel magazine in the hotels and at tourist attractions offering a free onion loaf with the purchase of two entrées. So you might want to be on the lookout for that coupon if you’re so inclined.
Having had a terrible steak experience the night before, David opted for steak. He said his sirloin was flavorful, tender, prepared perfectly and a good choice. His dinner came with all the usual accompaniments including a dinner salad and baked potato. He also ordered the optional side of mushrooms. I had the pulled pork platter, served dry with the barbecue sauce on the side. The pork was moist, very tender and delicious. Served with coleslaw and thin shoestring cut french fries, it was plenty for supper. All dinners include a yummy homemade cheesy biscuit that was light, fluffy, and not too cheesy.
To wrap up our outstanding dinner experience, we both ordered the homemade cobblers. David had the blackberry and I had the peach. They are served with a small single scoop of vanilla bean ice cream, which for me was too much. The cobblers were served warm and were yummy! If cobbler isn’t your thing, they did have a dessert tray with other offerings, which including a couple of varieties of cheesecake and carrot cake.
Service was outstanding and very attentive. Our bottomless ice tea was never empty! Our total meal as described came to $58 (excluding tip). You can stretch your dining bucks by visiting www.restaurant.com for valuable dining certificates. For just $10 you can purchase a $25 gift certificate. But be aware, there is limited availability of dining certificates for Shorty Smalls which means you need to plan ahead and buy for your trip on the first day of the month! We missed out for our trip, but wanted to make sure that others knew of the opportunity.

Get ready to eat. Enough said. Order the fried cheese. It is nothing like any other restaurant. The chicken fried steak has a special plate because it is soooo big.

The food is very good. There's a good variety of chicken, beef, burgers, etc. You could have a wait at peak dining times. The dining area is rustic and the service is good.

Shorty Small's was the best BBQ I have had in a long time! We ate lots of great food. The restaurant had a great atmosphere. It was decorated with rustic back-woods artifacts. It was neat. The service was very prompt and very nice.
