Casa Rio Mexican Foods Restaurant

Casa Rio is my favorite restaurant in San Antonio. I eat there every time I am in town. My favorite dish is the green chili enchalidas. It is a chicken enchilada, but instead of the typical red sauce or sour cream sauce, it is a green chili and tomatillo sauce served with sour cream. Wonderful! I have made it at home but  it never is as good as Casa Rio's. They also have delicious margaritas. You can get them frozen too if you like that. They first serve you salsa and chips, and I also order the queso. If you are visiting in the peak times, be prepared to wait for at least 15-20 minutes. It is worth it. The prices range from $7to $20 and the portions are generous.

Casa Rio is a Must on every trip to San Antonio. The food is great and quick. The best guacamole salad, cheap tasty margaritas, nice chips, and perfectly hot salsa. Both the chicken and cheese enchiladas are wonderful.

I had dinner at Casa Rio on Saturday night around 7pm. There was quite a crowd waiting for tables at that time. You choose whether you want to sit inside or outside. You leave your ID, and they give you a pager. That allows you to walk down to the bar. They serve delicious margaritas for less than $5. The bar is outside, with a view of the river and lots of people-watching. It's a nice place to wait for a table.

We decided to eat outside, right alongside the river. The weather was not too hot, and bugs/flies were not a big problem, even in July. The tables are set up so that a walkway for pedestrians is in the middle. That seemed challenging for the wait staff and definitely not a private setting for patrons.

I ordered the most popular thing on the menu - a combination plate including guacamole salad, chile con queso, cheese enchilada, chile con carne, tamale, beef taco, rice, and refried beans. It was definitely more than I could finish, but my father ate all of it. There was no need to have ordered an appetizer.

The chips and salsa and warm tortillas come with every meal. The salsa was pleasantly hot. When we asked for butter to go with the tortillas, I was disappointed that they brought margarine as our only choice. That seemed less than authentic. The guacamole was nicely flavored, over a small bed of shredded iceberg lettuce. That and the chips with queso came out first. Our entrees followed almost immediately, not allowing us enough time to linger over dinner - or even finish the first course. And the waitress did not check on us enough, leaving us to wonder if we'd be getting drink refills. She also brought the check without asking if we'd like dessert.

For the entrees, the cheese in the enchilada was pretty hard. The tamale was a wonderful texture. The taco was sitting on top of other items, which made the shell a little soggy. The ground beef was flavorful.

Someone else ordered the flan for dessert and said it was some of the best she'd ever tried.

The prices are extremely reasonable. For the combination plate that I ordered, it was about $8, and that was one of the most expensive choices on the menu. For the price, it's an excellent value.

I've eaten at other Mexican restaurants in San Antonio. Casa Rio is definitely a good choice in terms of food and atmosphere.

This is my favorite restaurant in San Antonio. It has been in its current location longer than any other restaurant on the Riverwalk (over 50 years). The food is not only local, it's outstanding. The atmosphere is unbeatable. You can eat outside alongside the river or at a table inside the restaurant. We had a pretty lengthy wait when we went, but it was crowded because of New Year's Eve. The food was well worth the wait. In the evenings, a mariachi band comes around to each table and will play you a song for a tip. It’s a true Tex-Mex experience!

It was right on the riverwalk. It is indoor/outdoor dining with great atmosphere. The food was reasonably priced and tasted good, too!
