Brix Restaurant

Brix: the term is used to measure the sugar content of grapes to determine their sweetness. What a perfect description of my experience of the Brix restaurant located in Yountville, just a few minutes south of Calistoga!

Brix is an oasis of brilliance on winter evenings with over 150,000 lights illuminating the towering trees in front. The inviting lounge shares its gigantic fireplace with a section of the dining room set with intimate tables for two. Expansive views of the Mayacamas Mountains, and the large trellised terrace beyond are viewed through the floor to ceiling windows.

Art deco chandeliers, wall scones, banquette lamps and hanging glass shades in grapevine motifs tie the entire dining room space together. An Open kitchen with brick oven wraps around two sides of the dining room and adds to the comfortable ambiance.

The entire menu excels in every way -- from velvety Foie Gras and exquisite oysters with caviar to, smoky rack of lamb, seared Ahi and grains and noodles. This is truly a unique experience in visual and culinary elegance, all picturesquely presented with flair. Imaginative wine pairings accompanied each entree and service was attentive without being intrusive.

Dessert proved to be the Grande finale to a great dining experience. Hawaiian Chocolate Napoleon, Creme brulee trio, Gelatos, Sorbet, Mouse Cheesecake--each has a special charm of its own. I suppose that is why a dessert sampler is offered for two or four.

Brix is a fantastic choice for a marvelous gourmet lunch or dinner, flawlessly served in a delightful setting. You can view BRIX menus at http://www.Brix.com TIP: Reservations are not only recommended, but at times they are mandatory!

If you like to cook or to eat, D&D is a great stop. They sell a wide range of prepared foods (everything from appetizers to dessert), so you can stock up for an afternoon picnic. Their roast beef is perfect and always fresh. The best way to do it is to just follow your stomach and load up a basket. Beware though, you can spend a lot there. Definitely do not purchase wine unless it's on sale (you're much better off bringing your picnic to a winery, purchasing some of their wine, and finding a nice picnic spot on their grounds). Note that some wineries don't like it when you bring food on premises, although many don't care or don't notice.

This was our favorite restaurant in Napa. The food was amazing and the architecture was designed to make the most of the surroundings. Brix sits on the outskirts of a wonderful vineyard and has an outdoor patio complete with a garden, benches and sculptures. We ordered our appetizers and immediately ventured outside to enjoy the last of the day's sunshine. The food was a fusion of traditional and more eccletic pairings. I started with a 'Ragout of Fava Beans & Roasted Mushroons with New Potato Salad, Chive Raita & Curry Oil'. I swear, I could have eaten the same thing every day I was in Napa! Everything on the menu and on the tables I saw looked mouthwatering. You can also bring in your favorite bottle of wine from your day's vineyard tours and they'll uncork it for a $15 dollar fee. Dessert is a must here so save room!
