The Beach House

I made reservations for the Beach House a few weeks before our trip. It was our anniversary and I wanted to make sure we got the perfect table during sunset. It was perfect.

The food was excellent. We started off with the crab cake appetizer. Unfortunately, you only receive two crab cakes. It was very pricey for such a small amount. But we still had the rest of our dinner to look forward to. I ordered the seared ahi, and it was cooked perfectly. It came with mashed potatoes and spinach (I think). It was more than enough food.

While dining, I suddenly looked around the dining room and noticed most of the tables were empty. Everyone was out looking at the sunset and having their pictures taken by the waiters! It was an amazing sunset and our waiter came over to our table and asked if we wanted our picture taken. I thought that was definitely above the call of duty. There is normally a professional photographer that will take your picture at sunset for a price, but he wasn't there that night. The sunset/ocean views from this restaurant and great food truly made it a special evening.

If you are on the Poipu area of the island, The Beach House is a must! Be SURE to make reservations in advance in order to dine while watching the sun set over the ocean. We arrived a little bit late (the sun had already set) and couldn't take full advantage of the beautiful view, however, we still had a wonderful dining experience. Especially good for a romantic dinner.

The Beach House

The Beach House restaurant bills itself as the quintessential dining experience in Kauai. What it definitely has going for it is absolutely killer sunset views, and you must arrive early or right on time for your reservation to get one of the prime sunset-viewing tables. No doubt about it -- the sunset is the reason to come here, and not only are all the diners fixated on the view, but the huge grassy lawn out front fills with families, photographers, and romantic couples all angling for the best glimpse.

The decor of the Beach House is frankly a bit generic, kind of like a mid-range hotel restaurant -- pretty, but bland. The food is good -- I had the famous macadamia-crusted mahimahi, which was fabulous, and the cocktails of the very-colorful-multi-layered-little-paper-umbrella variety. Our waiter was sweet and attentive, and helpful with suggestions on where to go out for a drink and some live music later that night.

All in all, worth a splurge on a special night . . . but very touristy and not at all off the beaten path!

The Beach House is right on the beach. Try and get a table along the giant open doors. The food was great and the atmosphere was romantic. Get a babysitter, as kids will be a distraction to you and others.

This notable restaurant is located on the south shore of the island a few miles west of Poipou Beach. It just happened to be across the small road in front of the Lawai Beach Resort where we were staying and so we were able to walk to dinner. Probably the memory most prominent in mind of The Beach House is its setting. It is within feet of the best snorkel beach on the island and you can not only see but hear the waves hitting the shore. It was a beautiful sunset evening when we experienced this jewel. The cuisine of the restaurant is a mixture of Asian, Island, Continental, and Seafood. It's very comtemporary in style. One entire side of the building are floor to ceiling sliding windows. As we were seated at a small table for four within inches of the windows, it felt as though we were dining on the beach itself with the sliding windows open. We could breath the night air and almost feel the splash of the mist from the waves. The food was an artistic presentation, very gourmet and delicious. Our children, then ages 14 and 9 were a bit pressed to find something that sounded good to their more basic appetites, but it was a culinary delight to the adults. The Bananas Foster dessert, also presented beautifully, was large enough for the four of us to share. It was such a unique location and the service was smooth and unobtrusive that we all felt the evening went much too fast when it was time to leave.
