Gotta Go Here for Dinner

This place was our absolute last meal on Kauai before heading back home. I'm glad we did because it was the best meal we had on the island. They have many options for all kinds of tastes. The food was prepared and presented in an excellent manner. They have a great wine list and oh, don't forget the dessert. We had the banana creme which is wonderful and not overly creamy. All in all an excellent experience for everything.

We went to Gaylord's for the breakfast buffet. We were seated outside with a very nice view of the plantation grounds. We had reservations which were totally uneccessary because we were the only ones there (except for the chickens)! The price of the buffet was very reasonable however, the food tasted as though it had been cooked several hours before we arrived and had been sitting. There wasn't much of a selection. The buffet consisted of fresh fruits, pasteries, muffins and breads, french toast, bacon, sausage, breakfast potatoes, and scrambled eggs. It also included coffee and tropical juice. There was a man playing guitar and singing while we ate which was very nice. The setting made the experience very relaxing, but I would recommend trying Gaylord's for dinner when you can order a freshly made entree that hasn't been sitting for a long time.

You can eat in the restaurant or make a reservation for what some believe is the best luau on the island. It's the only luau we've ever been to, so it's tough to say if it's the best. But we enjoyed the food and the entertainment immensely!

Gaylord's at Kilohana

Gaylords at Kilohana is by far the best restaurant on the island. This elegant estate home belonged to Gaylord Wilcox during the height of the sugar cane years. The restaurant has ambience and an excellent lunch, dinner, and Sunday brunch menu. Local ingredients enhance standard items, and the chef comes up with some imaginative offerings, too. Be sure to ask for the dessert menu! Prices in the evening are high, so we often go for lunch to get an equally exquisite meal for fewer traveler’s checks!

To top off a good meal, stroll through the shops tucked into former bedrooms, baths, and the plantation office. I always find a treasure there. Take a peek into the living room to get an idea about what elegant plantation life was like.

We went to the breakfast buffet our first morning, and it was $12 a person. It is in a lovely sugar plantation. They had French toast, eggs, breakfast meats, homemade breads, pastries, and fruits. They also served Hawaiian juices and coffee. It was somewhat standard but tasty fare. We were seated at a table with a lovely view of their gardens. They provide a lei for the adult women, but decided to give my 12-year-old daughter one, too.

Afterwards, you can do a two-for-one carriage ride of their lovely and interesting grounds and see things like banana trees. I later saw in one of the tourist coupon books you pick up all over the place and at the airport that if you mention their ad, you can save 20% off their regular buffet price.

There are also several nice gift shops, including a glassmaker's shop, Hawaiian clothes shop, jewelry store, and pottery studio to browse through before or after your meal. It was a pleasant start to our trip!
