They serve good food and plenty of it. The building has a nice view of the water. Reasonable prices. You can walk here from Cypress House on Caroline. Relaxed casual atmosphere.

We ate in the upstairs open-air deck. The food was good, the drinks were great, and the atmosphere was incredible. We had the best view of the sunset. A dog wandered upstairs and hopped up on a bar stool to be served. The bartender fixed him a bowl of water without batting an eye and it was obvious that this happens regularly. The locals all talked to us like we were regulars and shared their day. They were glad to tell us how they ended up there. Most had visited and were so taken in by the place they just couldn't leave. I completely understand that. It was the way to end a perfect day.

Turtle Kraals

Turtle Kraals is a great place to watch the sunset. Ask for an outside table, and you can watch the world go by while you eat. There is a boardwalk just below, so you can people-watch. I have some great photos of the sunset taken from right at our table.

You don't have to spend a lot here. Prices are pretty average, I would say, for entrees. I, however, decided to have the gazpacho and some conch fritters as a light meal. The gazpacho was excellent--the best I've had. I was not wild about the conch fritters, but they were decent.

There is a bar inside if you want to stop by for drinks instead. My dad went back later and tried that out. He found the bartenders to be very pleasant.

After dinner, go out back and look around. There are old turtle pens from when it was a cannery back in the old days. Neat!

Not a lot of thought went into picking this place - it was the first restaurant on our path after coming in off the water for lunch. They gave us a corner table facing the water, which made for good people and boat watching during our meal: always a plus. For appetizers we had the calimari and the nachos, both of which were quite good. The calimari wasn't overdone like you often see, and the nachos were full of fresh ingredients, although the chips were way too salty. My main course was the seafood enchiladas, and I was very impressed. Every bite had plenty of seafood, and the cheese was there for flavor, not to overwhelm the dish. Black beans and rice came on the side. The portions were large enough that I had plenty for dinner also. I don't think anyone left unhappy.

Turtle Kraals is located on the site of the historic A. Granday Turtle Cannery. Kraals is a Dutch-African word for corral. The kitchen is located where the old cannery stood with the kraals, where the turtles were kept before processing, are still located beside the bar. Our table looked out directly on the Kraals. We came to the Turtle Kraals on the recommendation of a fellow classmate, who had eaten lunch there. On our arrival, the hostess told us there would be at least a 30 minute wait for a table. More to Come....
