Café Gandolfi

I had just arrived off the train from Stranraer and was only looking for a light meal before going out. I went at 10:30am (they are open till 11pm). When you enter Café Gandolfi, it strikes you as being very cosy. The lighting is low and there is a pleasant buzz of conversation. The menu has an odd yet pleasing mix of Italian (bruschetta and pastas) and traditional Scottish (organic Stornoway pudding and haggis) dishes. I ordered the smoked chicken and duck salad and was served quite a big portion. The dressing would be too sweet on any other salad, but worked well with the strong flavour of the duck.

The bill, with an espresso, was £8.70.

A word of warning to taller diners (like me): the tables are rather low. They are, along with the chairs, however, works of art in their own right. More information is on the walls.
