HORRIBLE, HORRIBLE, HORRIBLE!!! Now, I really can't comment on the actual dining experience, because we never got that far! We were seated shortly after our reservation time of 8pm (Friday night: hint, hint, Kobe), our waitress took our order, and that's all. No follow-up drink refills, no "sorry it's taking so long", and, oh yeah, NO CHEF AT OUR TABLE MAKING OUR FOOD!(FYI: this is one of those places where the chef comes out to your table and prepares the dish in front of you.) That's right, after waiting for 1 1/2 hours, there was no sign of our chef!! I forgot to mention, they did manage to serve my shrimp tempura roll order, which was pretty good, and after which I gladly paid for, got up, and left. In fact, the TWO families sitting across from us also got up and left. Way to drop the ball, KOBE!!!

The question of reservations is a good one; we had reservations, arrived a few minutes prior to the time, and they had us wait over an hour—just like all the other people that had walked in without a reservation. So, whether or not you have a reservation may not help you. The food was pretty good, though the service was not that great.

Have you ever paid a lot of money for a fancy Japanese dinner cooked right in front of you? Kobe is the same food and same show but more than half the price. Just like BeniHana, but better. And they have early bird specials that lower the price or coupons in the tourist magazines that give you one free dinner with purchase of another. We loved the show, the food was great, and for the price, it's a must do!

After our disappointing experience at Kintaro in Kauai, I was eager to go to another sushi restaurant to get a better experience of the fresh fish that Hawaii has to offer. My husband, who is not the sushi aficionado, was more reluctant. We saw that Kobe had both teppan-yaki (which is when about eight people sit around a table and have a Japanese chef cook the food at the table) and sushi, and after a little bit of prodding, my husband agreed to go.

The restaurant is very big, with the sushi bar to your left and the teppan-yaki tables to the right. We went fairly early and there was no wait. We sat with six others at a generously sized table. I ordered my sushi (I was conservative, only ordered tuna and California rolls) and we sat down to watch our talented chef cook our chicken and beef entrees. The sushi was fast and fresh (the rolls were tight - loosely rolled sushi is one of my personal pet peeves). The chef was entertaining, flipping pieces of vegetables and eggs (with the shells on) into various crevices of his chef's attire (i.e., hats, pockets, etc.). The food was good, not great, but we knew we were paying more for the atmosphere and entertainment than for great food. Overall, it was a good experience, and my sushi craving had been allayed at last!

Inside of Kobe is one of the best Sushi bars in the Pacific. The clientele is primarily local, which helps newcomers find out about some of the local activities that you won't hear about elsewhere. The fresh sashimi is incredible.

If your children are not sushi eaters, they have chicken teriyaki or an Unagi bowl. The Unagi bowl is a favorite with my children, it consists of cooked freshwater eel with a sweet eel sauce over a bowl of rice. My son thinks it is neat that he is eating an eel. My daughter just loves the taste, she doesn't care what is in it!

The prices are reasonable and the sushi chefs are the best! A must try is the 69 Roll, and for you sashimi lovers, the yellowtail sashimi is so smooth. When they are not too busy the sushi chef will carve the yellowtail to resemble a rose (nice touch for some romance).

We have traveled all over the Pacific and Oku's Sushi bar inside the Kobe steak house in Lahaina is the one sushi bar that is a must visit for our family each year!
