Great Food, Low Cost

Ate here 5 times in 8 days. The best place to eat good food, cheap. Here's the secret. For a couple, order one item and share. If you're still hungry, go back and order a second item. The plates are enormous! The loco moco and saiman are excellent!

Our experience with this place was only so-so. My wife and I went on an early snorkel trip to Molokini at 7am. We got back around 10am and got to Da Kitchen around 10:30am. My wife was dying for some Portuguese sausage and eggs. Luckily breakfast didn't end until 11am. Unfortunately, they decided to stop serving breakfast at 10:30. That was a bummer on top of the fact that this place has no bathrooms. I attempted to run over to the next center and use the Denny's bathrooms upstairs, but they are code-locked for paying customers only.

The captain from the boat suggested Kihei Cafe which is just down the street. I kind of wish we had gone there instead, maybe my wife would've gotten her meal and I would've gotten my bathroom.

I ordered the Loco Moco and my wife got the chicken salad. Both were good portions. The atmosphere was a typical diner style with some flashed out colors.

Would I eat here again? Possibly, but my interest is more piqued for Kihei Cafe now.

I have tried just about everything on the menu here and have never had a bad meal. If you are looking for romantic, soft ambience, this is NOT it. This is a casual locals’ place to eat.

It is not expensive, as rates for lunch or dinner run between $5 and $9. With your entrée you get two scoops of rice, macaroni, OR green salad (just about every meal in the islands comes with rice and macaroni, and salad). They have WONDERFUL mahimahi and chicken katsu, which is lightly breaded chicken that comes with a spicy, tangy berbeque-type dipping sauce. The teriyaki chicken has FOUR pieces of chicken cooked just RIGHT in a teriyaki-flavored sauce. Other menu items include loco moco, noodle soup, Portuguese bean soup (at the Kahului location only), Kalua pork, and lau lau. Lau lau is something you MUST try. It is steamed, shredded pork wrapped and cooked in taro greens with just a tad of fish for extra flavor. TO DIE FOR, and one of my favorites.

There are about five booths and five tables at the KIHEI location, and Kahului location is much bigger. A lot of people do takeout, as this is a very busy place.

This is a fast food Hawaiian restaurant with a second location in Kahului that serves even yummier foods, but is unfortunately closing because the owners are rumored to be simply tired of being too busy - business has been too good! That's typical of the totally different attitude in Hawaii. The Kihei restaurant serves yummy chicken katsu, fish & chips, and other local fare. I'd suggest you skip the chow mein; there are plenty of other things to choose from. As the food is good and the price was right, we enjoyed two meals here.
