Life Is Like a Box of Chocolates...

In the movie "Forrest Gump" the crowd at the football game had to yell, "Stop, Forrest Stop!" to keep him from running out of the stadium. That phrase is on one side of a license plate at each table. If you want the wait staff to stop at your table, just display that sign. That indicates the fun atmosphere at this waterside restaurant. We were seated right at the railing overhanging the water. Great view, a fun waitress, and decent food made for a great experience. Forrest Gump was a champion ping-pong player and sure enough, there was a ping-pong paddle on each table. The paddle held the drink and dessert menu. We got a kick out of all the movie trivia posted around the room and incorporated in the menus. As expected there are a lot of shrimp dishes on the menu. Don’t let that discourage you from eating here if you don’t care for or can’t eat shrimp. I had excellent Fish and Chips. Bill had BBQ pork and a huge strawberry shortcake made with big biscuits not that cardboardy sponge cake. The staff was very accommodating to my special dietary requirements. I overheard our waitress asking movie trivia question to the large group at a nearby table. That sparked a lively competition and a lot of laughs within the group. Bubba Gump Shrimp Co. Restaurant and Market is located at 889 Front Street in Lahaina. Parking is a challenge, but there is a public lot across the street or street side if you get lucky. After eating, be sure to stop in the gift shop and do as the sign says: "Shop Forrest, Shop". Lunch for two with one dessert to share plus tip came to $42.

Say what you want to about the food quality (I personally liked it), or the wait staff (reasonable), it doesn't really matter. The view from Bubba Gump at sunset makes this an amazing dinner experience.

The food was ho hum. It was ok, but nothing special. It was very expensive. But, this is Maui so what can you expect? What we didn't expect is birds flying around inside the restaurant. That was not cool.

It's the Bubba Gump Shrimp Co. Lt. Dan!

It's the Bubba Gump Shrimp Co. Lt. Dan!

It’s a gitchy theme chain restaurant, but we thought we’d give it a try because it sits oceanfront in Lahaina, and we didn’t really want to eat at yet another Hard Rock café. Plus, the menu made us laugh (Lt. Dan’s favorites are listed, as are Jenny’s).

It took about 20 minutes to be seated, but I begged my way to an oceanfront table and watched the last of the sunset. Our waiter was a bit overly enthusiastic, but explained to us the Run Forrest Run! and Stop Forrest Stop! signs on the table. If we post the Run sign, we were ok and didn’t need the waiter. If we needed refills or something was wrong, we posted the Stop sign.

I thought I’d try Mama’s Fried Chicken and Mashed Potatoes, and my mom had fried shrimp. (If you’ve seen the movie, they had shrimp kabobs, fried shrimp, steamed shrimp, shrimp cocktail... ask Bubba for the rest). I also ordered an appetizer of onion rings. All this came to about $40.

Well, the dinner came before the appetizer, my strawberry lemonade came about halfway through the meal, and the waiter didn’t respond to the signs. The food was ok, nothing spectacular. But then, I didn’t expect it to be.

I don’t know that I’d recommend it for much other than its location and a good chuckle.

Yes it is a chain, a small chain, but the food was very good and the view was to die for. If you get there before sunset and the crowd (we're early eaters, in restaurant around 5 pm) the greeters will give you a window seat. Unimpeded view of the harbor, sunset, the ships coming in at night. Also, if the tide is changing, you'll occasionally get sprinkles of water from the tide hitting the pilings.
