Old Favorite Fares Well

Old Favorite Fares Well

Kimo’s is a popular place at 845 Front Street in Lahaina. In the evenings the street level is taken over by the bar crowd and bar food menu while the second floor is the dining area. At noon, when we visited, we were seated on the street level floor on the open-air lanai. In fact our choice of tables put us in the splash zone, as my husband quickly found out! It was a small table, but a terrific view of the water. We watched a wide variety of boats including the unusual looking Reefdancer, parasail, catamarans, and cruise ships. Kimo’s is a sister restaurant to Oahu’s Duke’s and Ka’anapali’s Leilani’s. Bill ordered a grilled Teriyaki Chicken Sandwich with grilled pineapple and Maui chips. He was happy with is selection. I ordered the "Broke Da Mouth" Plate Lunch. That is a luau combo of teriyaki chicken, pork ribs, rice and macaroni salad. The title is pidgin for delicious, and it was. I should have scraped the sauce off the ribs because they were excessively coated and very very messy. On the plus side for Kimo’s is the waterfront views, location close to the prime Maui shopping and strolling area, and a menu that agrees with most tastes. The down side is the lack of parking, and the teeny tiny tables. Lets face it, as tourists we carry a lot (shopping bags, cameras, purses, hats etc). At those tiny waterfront tables it’s hard to keep everything corralled and dry. A few well-placed hooks to get our stuff off the floor would have been appreciated.

Kimo's Restaurant - Hau`oli la hanau to me!

Kimo's Restaurant - Hau`oli la hanau to me!

I had posted on the Web soliciting restaurant recommendations for my birthday dinner in Maui, and one of the most suggested restaurants was Kimos in Lahaina. So I made reservations with a request for a waterfront table (Kimos is right on the beach). The first reservation time is 6pm – which in winter was a little late to catch the sunset.

Good thing I arrived early, because I found out that when the dinner service opens at 5pm, Kimos offers open seating on a first-come, first-served basis in the upstairs dining room. The 6pm reservations start when a table opens up after this first wave. I’m glad I found this out, and told the hostess that it was my birthday, because we got in line just in time to get the last waterfront table. This kind of made me mad that I wasn’t told this on the phone, but it all worked out and we got to eat dinner while watching the sunset.

The menu is a mix of steaks and seafood. With my penchant for red meat, I opted for the filet mignon, while my mom ordered the sautéed shrimp. Each meal came with a side and a ceasar salad, which was really good (many are just too garlic-y). The food, which I can’t say was the best I’ve ever eaten, was acceptable and good tasting. The waiter was very attentive and kept our water glasses full. The staff sang “happy birthday” to me and comped me Kimo’s world-famous hula pie (essentially an ice cream pie with macadamia nuts) with a candle on top.

For the two of us, our entrées and my birthday Blue Hawaiian drink ran about $65 without tip.

I’d recommend Kimos for the ambience and the experience more than for the food, but that was pretty good too. If you just want to give the hula pie a try, you can grab a drink and watch the sunset from the bar area downstairs.

Kimo's

We had the fish tacos here with Ahi tuna. They were enormous! I couldn't finish mine. They also put a lot of cheese on them, which wasn't really a good accent for the Ahi. However, Kimo's makes the BEST Lava Flow on the island. For those not in the know, a Lava Flow is a pina colada and a strawberry daiquiri blended separately and then poured into the same glass. It makes lovely red-and-white swirls in the glass. What sets Kimo's Lava Flows apart from the rest is that they add a banana to the Pina Colada. It's just the right touch and soooo yummy. Kimos is oceanfront, and we were lucky enough to get an oceanfront table. It is in a very nice location, and there is a great wait staff.

A couple of people had told us to check this place out. Well, we did, and I wish we hadn't. I was really looking forward to some good seafood since I was in Hawaii, so I ordered the Ono in a Macadamia nut crust. It was very dry, a little tough, and the flavor was bland. My wife had a filet mignon that was pretty good, and the Caesar salads were fresh. The service was poor, as well. We waited 10 minutes before we saw our waiter, then it was a good hour before our meals came, and then, getting the check took forever. Hopefully, it was just a bad night, because other people have said it was great, but if I go back to Maui, I will skip this spot.

If you are looking for seafood at a reasonable price and a great view at sunset, go to Kimos. Kimos is a chain restaurant, but it beats the other high priced choices in Lahaina. They also have live music and lunch specials.
