Our Absolute New Favorite Maui Restaurant

Our Absolute New Favorite Maui Restaurant

We came for breakfast and stayed for lunch. (Well, not exactly.) After reading several guidebook and on-line reviews of The Gazebo, we searched it out. Located poolside on the property of the Napili Shores condominium complex, 5315 Lwr. Honoapiilani in Kapalua, this fifteen-table restaurant is known for its breakfasts. It also has a reputation for long waits in line to get a table. But rarely do you hear a complaint on that score. When we arrived at about 10:30 a.m. there was a long line. Bill held our place in line and I explored the area. Instead of a sandy beach the shore has a lava rock tide pool. I watched as people walked around observing the critters in the pools. Later, I saw someone netting the area…maybe that harvest would be on the lunch menu. Once we were seated we decided on ordering from the breakfast section of the menu. I had a customized Kula Veggie omelet and for 50 cents more added some tasty Portuguese Sausage. There was rye toast and country potatoes on the side. Wow! Was that good! Bill had standard fare of scrambled eggs, bacon and toast, but with the view of Napili Bay and Molokai it was a perfect breakfast. It was so good we decided to come back a couple of days later for lunch. This time Bill had a Club Sandwich and I had the best Kalua Pork Plate Lunch I’ve ever had. The pork was very flavorful and instead of two scoops rice and one macaroni, this plate lunch was served with steamed cabbage and a small tossed salad with Papaya seed dressing. The service here is exceptional. It is very crowded in the small pavilion, but despite that the customers seemed to all be in a good mood and credit goes to the wait staff who are personable and accommodating. Our waitress told us there had been three whale sightings recently, which is rare for this early in November. That kept us watching the bay between forks-full of food. The Gazebo is open from 7:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Park as far back in the lot as you can and walk to the poolside through the lovely central courtyard. Meals for two with tip averaged $32.00.

The Gazebo

This is a secret place that has been let out of the bag! The Gazebo has wonderful inexpensive breakfasts, lunches and a one of a kind view! The hours are from 7:30am until 2pm and the line does start at 7am. This is the place you definitely have to get up early for, unless you like standing in line.

Just go North on Hwy 30, (The LOWER part of Honoapiilani Rd) to the Napili Shores resort. Drive straight to the back of the complex until you come to a dead end. Park and walk thru the pool and it’s right there.

There are about 20 tables inside here, and service is pretty good, so tables turn relatively fast and he (Jerry, the owner) usually has a coffee station set up at 7am, to help wake you up.

Just so you know, the combo pancakes (macadamia nut, banana and pineapple) are to die for and you absolutely have to have at least a short stack to share. You would be doing yourself a huge injustice if you skipped them. They come topped with this wonderful whip cream concoction of Dream Whip, butterscotch and maple syrup. It sounds really sweet, but it’s perfect. I had it on the side because I wasn’t sure if I would like it, but it really made the dish. The coconut syrup that was on the table was good, but the dream whip really was perfect with the pancakes.

My other favorite dish (because I share the pancakes) is the Popeye omelet. It’s loaded with fresh spinach, Maui onions, cheese and topped with hollandaise sauce. YUMMY!
Hubby tends to get the Portuguese sausage omelet.
They have POG if you’re interested and even the coffee is yummy.

We’ve never had lunch here, but they have some interesting looking salads. Maybe next time we come, we’ll have lunch, but breakfast is a must!

Skip the $25.00 breakfast buffets and make the short drive thru a very quaint community to the Napili Shores Resort and the Gazebo restaurant. You might get a chance to ring the ‘Whale bell' that sits poolside.

Gazebo

Gazebo

How fitting that our most memorably delicious meal was our last on Maui. One final tip our concierge gave us was to try brunch at The Gazebo, located within the Outrigger Napili Shores Resort.

When we arrived at the hotel, my skepticism rose. I do not normally enjoy eating at hotel restaurants. So as we walked toward the pool area and I began to realize that the Gazebo was the round open structure by the pool, my first inclination was to turn around and find another option. We walked around the pool and got in line to be seated in the tiny restaurant. One tip, get there as early as possible because the lines can be long due to the low capacity.

However, on that morning, the service must have been especially speedy since we were seated promptly. We ordered the macadamia nut, pineapple and banana pancake platter, as well as an omelet chocked full of goodies, including Portuguese sausage. As we ate, we grew silent because what we tasted so thoroughly satisfied our appetites. Even the birds around the restaurant knew how good the food was as they perched along the perimeter, watching the diners for scraps. As I held out a bit of bread, one bird flew down and took the morsel from my hand in mid air. Brave little critter.

If looks were any indication of how good the food is inside an establishment, then I would venture to say that one must look for a reverse correlation. The Gazebo is an unimpressive structure, which at first glance, could be mistaken for an average poolside bar. In reality, it is a well-run restaurant serving delectable and filling meals for a reasonable price. We spent $21.00 on a filling meal for the two of us. Don’t miss this or you’ll lose the opportunity to discover something truly memorable.

This is a local place known for breakfast. The line starts early (once you find the place in the back of a parking lot for condos). We waited for about an hour in on/off showers. We milled around the pool for the condo complex feeling like we were intruding, but I am sure that the residents were used to this. The place is known for macadamia nut pancakes. I thought they were wonderful; after waiting an hour, I was almost ready for anything, but these came, and they were sweet and filling and crunchy, and I realized I would wait all over again if I had the chance.

What better way to start off a morning in Maui than by eating an amazingly tasty and hearty serving of macadamia nut pancakes with views of the Napili Bay, Molokai and Lanai?

The Gazebo restaurant is oceanfront, next to the pool on the Outrigger Napili Shores property and is a favorite among locals and tourists. Even though we were staying at the hotel, by the time we made it to the Gazebo at about 8am there was already a line. There are only about 15 or so tables so the restaurant gets filled up quickly. The line wasn’t so bad though; we just grabbed a cup of complimentary coffee and chatted with the other vacationers while we waited.

The restaurant is only open for breakfast and lunch. I had a combo with mac-nut, pineapple, and banana flavored pancakes topped off with coconut syrup and served with potatoes. There was so much food I was able to save leftovers for breakfast the next morning, and even reheated it was still pretty good! My friend enjoyed an omelet, which was also great. Their lunch menu consists of burgers, sandwiches and salads.

Operating hours are from 7:30am-2pm and there is free parking on the hotel lot. The atmosphere is casual, the views are great, and everything is offered at very reasonable prices – breakfast started at about $7.
