The one thing that California just doesn't have are good delis, or so we thought until we got to Palm Springs. Sherman's could be in the Bronx, Queens, or Manhattan, except this gem is right in the middle of the California desert.
It's a true deli with huge overstuffed sandwiches and the best matzo ball soup anywhere on the west coast! They have a pastrami sandwich that instead of using bread, uses two potato latkes to hold the sandwich together -- OUTRAGEOUS but wonderful! If you have room (you won't), the desserts are huge and wonderful.
One thing NOT like a New York deli is the staff. The desert deli staff has big smiles and make sure your stay with them is comfortable and enjoyable.
Sherman's does have some outdoor seating with misters in the front of the deli. It's great on a warm desert day except it's the only place to smoke and everyone is lighting up like crazy. I prefer the clean air inside! However, the outdoor seating is also dog friendly and you always see a poodle munching on a bagel under the tables there!
The deli will not accept reservations so be prepared for a wait at busy times. The lines do move fast as the staff gets everyone fed and in and out. Be prepared you may even see your favorite star having a nosh, we have seen several biggies here.
Sherman's does close for a few weeks each summer. It is also a block from the big casino so if you are not a winning streak head over for a piece of cheesecake. Sherman's can't be beat!
