Not a Great Experience

On this trip, we happened to do a time-share sales event where one of Thoroughbred’s promotional coupons was given as an incentive. So we decided to try the restaurant for dinner.

I called and was please to be able to make reservations at the last minute.

Let me begin by saying that the food was top notch. The Caesar salads were fresh, light, and delightful. My wife had the filet mignon which was prepared exactly right and I had the stuffed shrimp which was wonderful. The accompanying vegetables were also very delicious and complemented the entrees as they should. Portion sizes were correct, (may have been just a little pricey), but we do understand that a good chef is a Necessity. The atmosphere was comfortable with a nice décor and toned lighting that was conducive to an intimate environment. Although he was not our server, we were also entertained by the young native of Russia who prepared salad and entrées for a nearby table.

Having expressed the positives, the negatives are far more weighty.

After being seated, and given water, it appeared that we had been forgotten. 15 or 20 minutes later, we had not yet been approached by a waiter. I tracked down the water server and asked if we could order pre-dinner cocktails and he indicated that he would get our waiter. After another 10 minutes, the water server returned with a bread basket and more water. A waiter had still not shown up, so we asked the water server to give our cocktail order to the bar. He did and returned with our pre-dinner drinks 5 minutes later. We also requested menus from him since we still had not been approached by a waiter. Finally, approximately 45 - 50 minutes after our arrival, a waiter made an appearance at our table, quickly took our order and left. We were not asked about a wine selection, but fortunately, the "water boy" kept our glasses full. The meal arrived within a reasonable time from ordering, maybe about 1 hour 15 minutes after our arrival. We ate the meal, was asked about dessert, and given the bill at which time I presented the coupon.

The waiter indicated that it could not be used because it was a holiday and the coupon specifically says "not to be used on a holiday". A holiday is New Year’s, July 4th, … Christmas. Mother’s Day is just an occasion like Arbor Day, Groundhog Day or National Bowler Hat Day. It is not a holiday in anybody’s book. I know that I did not received holiday pay and I seriously doubt that Thoroughbred’s establishment paid holiday pay for Mother’s Day.

The entire amount of time that we were there was about 2 hours. I don’t mind spending that time for dinner, to the contrary, I relish dinner events, but the time should be filled with fun, food, and drink. Not with just sitting and long pauses between courses.

We did tip appropriate to the bill, but way more than the level of service that we received. Overall, although the food was wonderful, the evening was not a good experience, and the Thoroughbred’s ordeal will be memorable, but not like you or I would wish.

Thoroughbreds is an intimate and elegant dining eperience. Cozy little candlelit tables, a stone fireplace and great food make this an excellent choice for a special dinner. We finished the evening with the best Tiramisu I have ever had.
