Overcharged Gift Card and Refused Refund

Ate dinner with a large party 7/22/09. Food, service and atmosphere were good. Had a nice time, BUT as we were leaving a member of our party purchased 2 T_shirts. She paid separately with a mastercard gift card and signed the receipt that showed the correct price $33+. Later in the evening she used the same card and it was rejected. She called the card service and found that Joes had charged the card $40+ (20% over the amount she had authorized). She contacted the manager the next day, showed her the receipt and the card charge record but did not get any help. She also contacted a regional manager without result. Bottom line ---- eat there if you want but DO NOT USE A GIFT CARD it is too easy for them to overcharge the card and you will have no recourse.

Good Food, Okay Service, Long Wait on the Bill

Visited the Joe's at Broadway at the beach several times. Last visit was on May 17, 2009. Table of 4 each ordered the steam pots (they were good). Our server was pretty good about filling our drinks throughout the meal. However we had the table full of dishes, steampots everywhere and not once did the server take away any of the empty-finished plates or pots throughout the meal. I say this because it became difficult to manuver empty shells, corn cobs, empty crab legs around the table (the "trash" bucket was filled and we were using empty steam pots for trash...finally we just put a couple of the pots on the floor, under our table). One of the weirdest thing about this particular visit was that we had 4 different managers come by the table to ask us how everything was going. My wife and two grown daughters looked at our table (the piles of empty plates & steam pots & "trash") and waited to see if any of the four managers offered to do any actual labor (they just strolled around and then all sat at the back at one table). Yes, we could have asked for somebody to take some dishes away but we were just surprised by the lack of effort on the managers behalf. Now, we wait about 15 minutes to get the bill, we waited another 5 minutes to get the change but there was no receipt. I asked for a receipt, that took at least another 15 minutes (because it appeared our server was having difficulty with finding our receipt at the register near the kitchen in the back because one of the "managers" was standing there at the register trying to help her). One of the things that appeared to have caused a delay in getting our bill and receipt was that we used three $25 gift certificates (that we bought prior to our visit), plus $15 off our bill for buying the $75 gift certificates). Evidently this was a very very difficult thing to calculate in the system while the server was trying to generate our bill and receipt). The wait was very long, my daughters & wife left the table and went outside to shop and I was stuck at the table. The four managers sitting at the back table made eye contact with me several times and could clearly see that I had been waiting a long time for my bill & receipt and not once did they make any effort to get up and help. This was on a Sunday afternoon around 4:00 and they were not busy at all. This visit left a bad taste in my mouth for Joe's lack of managerial assistance.

Waited over and hour for our table and then 45 minutes for our food. Everything arrived cold and then the server told us the manager was too busy to come to our table. Wasted $100 of this meal and will never return.

Joe's Crab Shack at Barefoot Landing

joes

I went to my first Joe's Crab Shack a couple of years ago when the wife and I visited San Antonio, Texas. Joe's is only one in a line of quality restaurants operated by the owners of Joe's--others include Landry's, Willie G's, The Chart House, and more. These are all high quality restaurants.

Cuisine

: Obviously, the cuisine at Joe's centers around seafood. We started off the evening by ordering the Blue Crab Dip as an appetizer--this one I can highly recommend. When it comes time for the entrée, our personal favorite in the Dungeness Crab. They also have Alaskan King, Alaskan Snow, and Blue crab. I've have many types of crab steamed, but Joe's offers all their crabs entrees either steamed, barbecued, or garlic-style. Now, I have never seen barbecued crab before, and I just couldn't talk myself into to ordering it. . .it did appear to be a popular item there in Myrtle Beach. Service:

The service was excellent. Our waiter was polite, cordial, and extremely helpful. He returned to the table often to freshen our drinks. One of my pet peeves is sitting at the table waiting for a check when I've finished eating. One service that will guarantee a generous tip from me is having the check at the table when I'm ready to leave. Our waiter earned a generous tip.

Prices:

. Most of the seafood entrees were in the $17-20 area………the bill for two of us was slightly over $40.

Décor:

The décor is actually that of an old sea shack. Our table was picnic style table with bench seats (high quality, though). I found them to be slightly uncomfortable, but there are also padded booths available and I'm sure they would have changed out seats had we asked. Don't surprised at what you see hanging from the ceiling, rafters and windows. It reminds me of a very clean and neat backyard shed. I have to admit I was taken aback a little when I saw the baby stroller hanging from the outdoor patio. Overall, the décor is a pleasant experience.

Other Benefit:

There are two Joe's Crab Shacks in the Myrtle Beach area; the one we visited was at Barefoot Landing and the other is at Broadway at the Beach. Both locations are very interesting shopping areas built in a waterfront setting, with all the building located on boardwalk and the architectural structures emulating a rustic fishing village. Eat early and give your self time to walk it off afterwards; there is much to see at both of these locations.

We went in early May, so the it wasn't at all crowded and we were seated immediately. The service was excellent, as was the food.
