Thanksgiving Gluttony at Its Finest

The Buffet at the Excalibur is one of the biggest in Las Vegas. These have always proven popular with the Vegas crowd, so if you are going to come here then it's advisable to go in the quiet hours outside of the the established dinner and lunch times. Otherwise you may well be confronted with some very very long lines. Also, while we were there, they offered a 2 for 1 deal between the hours of 10am and 2pm. This is well worth it as the prices have recently gone way up. For lunch, per person, you're looking at something in the region of $17 per head, plus a long wait time.

Walking in, it's not the glitziest place in the world, but any displeasure you may feel at the decor is quickly erased by the sheer number of delicious looking foods on offer. It really is huge. I last went there at Thanksgiving and they had so much food to choose from I almost ate myself sick. Traditional turkey roast, stuffing, biscuits, three types of gravy, eight different types of salad, a full carvery station, a Chinese section, an Italian section ... It's advisable to bring stretchy trousers when you come here as you really won't want to stop eating.

Once you're done with that of course, there's an entire section devoted to desserts. If you're feeling a little full, try a bowl of the soft serve ice cream. It cleanses the palate and expands your stomach just enough to squeeze something else in before you go. On Thanksgiving there were more than 20 different types of pie as well as fresh fruit, pudding, chocolate mousse, and much more besides. Their drink selection is also good, with tea, coffee and a range of fountain drinks all available on an all you can manage basis.

I you're looking for a cheap option that will fill you to breaking point then this is a good one. Go whenever they have a special on - at the time of writing that was 10am to 2pm, as mentioned above - and you'll be set for more food than you can possibly eat and all of it prepared to a pretty high standard. Outside of these special offers though, it's gotten rather pricey in its old age.

We were here at the Excalibur to go to a show (see Louie Anderson review) and since the show was early (7pm) we decided on a close place and tried this one.

They had plenty of food but it was not all hot enough because some was barely warm but there were plenty of choices with most made for families like pizza, fried chicken, tacos, and meat loaf. Plenty of desserts are also available as well, from Jell-o to pies to cake and ice cream.

You do get your own drinks which a little different from most Las Vegas buffets. The only other thing that I remember is that the number of families is tremendous and the kids seem to just run around and that does distract from the dining.

Yes, I know it's a buffet but the kids are worse here than almost all the other buffets we have ever been to so it is worth mentioning. But if you do take your kids to Vegas then go because they will enjoy it, but please, watch them.

Prices are as follows (as of 9/2009 at least)
Breakfast - $10.99
Lunch - $11.99
Dinner - $14.49
Sunday Champagne Brunch - $13.99

So would we go back again? Yeah, but only if we were low on funds, or had kids with us, or were hungry and had a show at the hotel to go to. The food is not bad but for those without children I recommend going to another restaurant.

Buffets in Las Vegas are like pizza shops in New York City: They're everywhere! They range in price from about $11 per person (at Circus Circus) to more than $30 per person (At the Wynn) for dinner. So when you come across a place that offers good food and lots of it for $15 per person you just have to spread the word.

The fare is pretty much what you would find at most buffets—salads, veggies, chicken, pork, beef, carving station, etc.—but the quality of the food is quite good. Every thing was prepared fresh, no frozen veggies or chicken here, and thank God no canned potatoes! Everything was fresh. There were Chinese and Mexican stations where popular items were there for those who wanted them. The best thing I found was the carving station: these guys were not cheap with the prime rib. Each slice was always at least 1/2 inch thick. The ham and the turkey were moist, nothing had been sitting around.

So if you're in Vegas and looking to gorge yourself at a reasonable price, I recommend you take a trip to the Excalibur's Roundtable Buffet.

Round Table Buffet

The Round Table Buffet was a true feast for the palate and the eyes. We walked right in with no waiting and before us was enough food to feed the king and his army. We hoisted plates that must have been over 12" in diameter.

The evening buffet featured prime rib and shrimp to go along with all the other usual fare of salads, meats, vegetables, sides, bread and rolls, drinks, and desserts. There was so much to eat and so little time!! I did my best, but I couldn't find enough room for a second round. Agh! The food was good but not spectacular.

The price was right though and I would eat here again for a good old-fashioned meat-and-potatoes type of menu. The decor is, of course, early Camelot with a touch of the Lord of the Rings. Breakfast and lunch buffets are also served here.

Long lines but a lot of food; the price includes a champaigne sunday brunch ($12.99 per adult), which includes veal, prime rib, eggs benedict, waffles, bacon, sausages, and chocolate cake.
