The city has an abundance of Italian eateries but Pani's is different - a bistro rather than an attempt to create a trattoria, relaxed but modern - the walls aren't decorated with suspect Italian souvenirs from the 1970s.

Pani's is a family-run affair and like most Italians they love children and the family will make a fuss of families dining there. Service is swift and very friendly - the lovely waiters will be a hit with the ladies! Pani's have a day time menu Monday through Saturday between 10am and 5pm, and an evening menu served after 5pm. Some dishes are available on both menus but the evening menu has a host of specials priced up to around £12. These include meat, poultry, fish, and vegetarian dishes, so the choice is good.

At lunch time the menu starts with soup priced about £2.60 and garlic bread for £2.35. The most expensive starter is the chicken salad. Even for starters the portion sizes are good - I would recommend sharing the platters. The lunch time staples are bread based - ciabatta, focaccia, or toasties filled with delicious fresh Italian ingredients - salami, rocket, sun -blush tomatoes, cheese, fresh herbs, seafood. Ciabatta comes in under £4 and focaccia under £5.

A list of pasta dishes is also available - the seafood pasta with clams is my highest recommendation -delicious with loads of seafood! More exotic dishes (and more expensive) appear on the pasta list in the evening. Pani's offer a good range of desserts - lots of Italian specialities like tiramisu and Italian ice cream but things like cheesecake and cream cakes too. The coffee is excellent so you could just pop in for coffee and a dessert. The wine list is short but good. Whites and reds start from only £9.95 a bottle.

Pani's is a good place for casual dining or for a celebration. It can get busy so reservations are recommended for the evenings. At lunch time you should get there around twelve and not much later to get a table since many office workers like to lunch at Pani's. My only reservation is that it can get quite noisy so it's not the place for an intimate dinner. In typical Italian style, the waiter's like to call orders at the top of their voices and shout to one another. On top of the music from the TV screens on the wall this can become quite irritating. Pani's if you read this - ditch the MTV, you' don't need it! Close
