Coyote Cafe Rooftop Cantina

Coyote Cafe Rooftop Cantina

Adjacent to the renown, Coyote Cafe, The Cantina offers mouth watering food, great views, and stiff margaritas for the fraction of the cost of dinner at the formal restaurant. The open-air, festive atmosphere transports you to another place -- the Mexican Riviera perhaps. However, make sure to sit under the awning since it rained cats and dogs while we were at The Cantina. As everyone ran for shelter, we were safe and sound, snuggling under the canopy.

Want to dine at the famous Coyote Café but don’t want to pay that much for dinner? In the warmer months, you can eat at their rooftop cantina for about half of what you’d spend in the regular restaurant. You don’t need a reservation, but we did have to wait close to a half hour for a table. That’s not too bad, especially considering I showed up with a group of 15 people at 7:00. I was impressed with how fast they seated us considering the size of the group.

Several traveling companions and I ate here after a very long day of traveling from the east coast. The festive, open-air atmosphere was just what we needed to get out of travel mode and into vacation mode. The margaritas didn’t hurt either!

The Cantina menu focuses on classic Mexican dishes such as quesadillas, tacos, tamales, etc. It’s not the fine dining you’ll find in the restaurant, but the food is most delicious. I had the chicken tacos, which were very spicy, but among the best I’ve had. Several other people raved about the duck quesadillas. The portions are generous but not so huge that they will feed two people.

The service was fair. The place was packed so I’m assuming that’s why it seemed to take longer than usual to get our food. It was also hard to find a waitress at times.

As for the cost, each person had an entrée, a drink and shared appetizers. We each spent less than $20. Dinners in the main restaurant start at $20. All considered I walked away a very happy – and full – customer.

On our last night in Santa Fe, we decided to treat ourselves at Coyote Cafe, which is a famous Southwestern resturaunt and quite a brand name in itself. Maybe we were very hungry, but the food that night was exceptional, and better than I remembered.

I had an awesome Chorizo Green Chile Relleno for an appetizer- a cornmeal Crusted Stuffed Green Chile. And for the entre I had a very flavorful Grilled Double Cut Pork Chop with a Mezcal-Habanero Glaze. Best pork chops I have ever eaten. Needless to say, I was completely satisfied and full with this meal. Ally enjoyed a superb Spicy Honey Glazed Lamp Chops dish, which she argues was better than mine!

On a cold late December night, Ally and I got into Santa Fe around 8:00 PM, and we wanted to try the famous place called Coyote Cafe, a New Mexican food landmark located right in the middle of town. They were, of course, booked up, but luckily we were able to enjoy a wonderful meal at the bar. Eating at the bar is fun because the food comes faster and it's easier to share food and share intimate conversation.
We sat next to a funny young guy (snowboarder-type guy) who works at the place, and he made some 'AWESOME' recommendations. They have a broiled quail for an appetizer that was delicious. That's the dish I remember the most. The Desert was also nice- an apple-banana tart.
