Awsome If You Know What to Eat

I go to Tomasita's once or twice per month
there are people in town that rate it based on steak or hamburger or shrimp cocktail... may be there are better places for these things (I am italian and, e.g., do not rate a tex-mex restaurant for pasta); but, for southwestern food is amazing.

Try the roast-beef burrito (better the green chili; if you like it spicy, order also extra red salsa on the side) and, above all, have as an appetizer the guacamole with red salsa. Both guacamole and red salsa are truly exceptional, and guacamole is also present on other plates (excellent the chalupas). Be sure to try also the stuffed grape leaves.

For carne adovada, however, I prefer to go El Rancho de Chimayo

A good, crowded cocktail bar is attached to the restaurant and you have a drink while waiting... expect to wait 1 hour on Friday and Sunday nights; you can have a walk in the nice train station area. Prices are extremely reasonable, the ambient is nice.

In one word? Disgusting! In some more words? Well, let's start. They don't serve Mexican but "new" Mexican food. Nobody warns you about that. Their chili is famous, but famous for what? That it is so wet, you almost need a lifeguard? It's not spicy at all! Everything smells and tastes the same.

And, if you have really bad luck, your seat is with your back to the bar where all the other unlucky people are waiting. So you get an occasional elbow on your head or even a cooling margarita down your neck! Do yourself a favour and keep away from this place!

The local buzz on this place is deafening, but I must the food was a bit disappointing. Maybe I simply didn't get it. You be the judge -- are the locals or am I crazy?

Tomasita's is located next to the old train depot. The food is great authentic southwest. Good price. Be sure to order the guacamole and chips--delicious! And a margarita too. Stuffed sopaipillas for desert. Plenty of vegetarian dishes as well. Atmosphere is casual. My mother and I ate here around 5 PM, just before the dinner rush hour. We didn't have to wait for a table, but if you do arrive later, expect to wait awhile. It's worth it though.
