Maya

Have you ever been on vacation and gone to a restaurant that was so good you wish they'd open one in your hometown? San Francisco's Maya is that restaurant for me.

Chef Richard Sandoval has created a beautiful space, with rich colors, comfortable seating, and stylish decor. The bar area is dominated by a rustic-style wood bar; the dining area feels light and airy by day, and romantic by night. Fresh-made avocado dip is a reliable starter. I particularly enjoyed the ceviche de mahi mahi, which had just the right amount of spice to enhance the fish. Appetizers run from $7.50 to $12, with a good selection to suit all tastes.

Then came the tough decision of which of their mouth-watering dinner entreés to order! I went with the langosta y camarones, lobster and shrimp marinated in achiote paste. My dinner companion had halibut totec, pan roasted Alaskan halibut dusted with black and white sesame seeds, with scallops in a spicy lobster broth. The food was as much of a delight to the eyes as it was to the palette. Most Maya entrées are from $17 to $26.

Need a little something to drink? Maya has a variety of "muddled fruit" margaritas, with the usual flavors like strawberry, raspberry and lime, but also interesting flavors like pineapple, hibiscus, peach, chile, pomegranate, and cilantro. Save room for dessert, though, because the desserts are divine! They have a very flexible prix-fixe menu, which includes an appetizer, entreé and dessert for $30 to $35. If you can't make it to Maya for a full sit-down dinner, they're also open for lunch, as well as their extremely affordable, adjacent take-out location, called Maya Nest Door, which offers lunch choices from $3.50 to $7. Maya's is excellent modern Mexican cuisine, within easy reach of the business district.
