A warm, friendly atmosphere pervades this traditional-looking Japanese restaurant. Regulars who keep the place full most of the time include students from the nearby universities, and neighborhood residents of all ages joined by tourists looking for a break from the retro-hippie scene that Upper Haight Street embodies. The tempura is deep-fried to a satisfying crunchiness and the teriyaki is sharp and tangy. Ramen bowls are of enormous proportions. It is served up by a personable wait staff. Sushi is also on the menu, and though the selection is limited to classics such as tuna rolls and yellow tail, the quality is first-rate.
