You'll Be Craving It Long After You've Gone Home

The menu will have you salivating for weeks! The only problem is that you will never be able to enjoy another Indian restaurant. The variety for both vegetarians and meat lovers is abundant. The mango ice cream is dreamy. My parents, who previously hated Indian food, said it was amazing. My father said it was the best meal he had ever had! I couldn't disagree with him. We all agreed that the next time we go to San Francisco, it will be the only place we will eat. The service was nice too...though, the food was so wonderful, I would have not have cared if the service was lousy.

WOW! I'm from India and am always on the hunt for a good Indian meal... New Delhi is by far the best in San Francisco. There food is no holds bar Indian, just well presented. Their pakoras remind me of eating at street vendors in Delhi (a good thing). Their Rogan Josh is the best I have eaten in the US. Their Chicken Korma and nan bread are really good as well. They have an actual tandoori oven in the kitchen (I asked to see it and they let me!), so all the tandoori dishes are great. And if you tell them to make it spicy... they do!

Great Food and Close to Everything

Ok, so it's not really close to EVERYTHING, but it two blocks from Union Square and a block from Muni/Bart, so you can get to everywhere from there. But whatever, location you can get everywhere. The food is what brings you in the door. I live in an Indian food backwater, so any chance I have for really good Indian, I grab on with both hands. This is the real deal. The cuisine is Northern Indian, if anyone is particular. The nan bread comes out piping hot and crispy with mint and tamarind chutney. I asked and they do have an actual tandoor oven in the kitchen. I've been here a few times and everything has been great, but I will recommend the tandoori chicken, the sag paneer and the rogan josh. These are Indian classics, but New Delhi does them so much better.

The New Delhi Restaurant & Bar

The vast expanse of open floor space, littered with a multitude of tables clad in bright white cloth is the first thing that struck me upon walking into the New Delhi Restaurant in downtown San Francisco.

As I awaited the arrival of the two IgoUgo guides I had come there to meet, I had a chance to look around. The sheer size of the restaurant (a converted hotel ballroom) was perfectly complimented by its high ceilings, looming columns, and ornate woodwork. The walls of New Delhi are authentically adorned with antique tiles imported from Florence, Italy. The ambiance of the restaurant is best described as elegant, yet subdued -- not at all overdone.

After everyone had arrived, we all quickly dove into the extensive and ultimately traditional menu. Award winning chef/owner Ranjan Dey prides himself on serving food "made from recipes culled from the royal Indian menus dating back 300 to 400 years using the freshest ingredients available." I enjoyed a crispy samosa for the appetizer portion of my meal, and the delicious chicken tandoori for the entrée. Both were delicious and all the spices were just right.

In addition to running the restaurant, Ranjan Dey also offers private cooking lessons to be arranged by appointment. Ranjan provides demonstrations, and subsequently offers tastings of the incredible dishes you can learn to make at home. In addition to your lesson, you also receive a gift of six spice blends and an Indian meal planner.

The New Delhi Restaurant is open for lunch from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. and for dinner from 5:30 p.m. to 10 p.m. Bar hours are Monday through Saturday, 11:30 a.m. to 2 a.m.
