Zuni Cafe

Zuni Cafe serves late night dinners to those who make it through their doors by midnight.

Minimal wait on a weekday night, choice of seating includes a formal tablecloth area, a seat at the bar, or a casual spot upstairs or by the front.

Appetizer specialty is the oysters on the half-shell. They are priced individually, and customers are known to dine on the oysters alone.

Recommended main course is the roasted chicken for two. After an hour wait, our chicken arrived with salad greens, pinenuts, and toasted bread. The chicken was tender, flavorful, and plentiful.

The flourless chocolate cake also is on the top of the list, normally with a side of cream. (Our waiter suggested a side of gingersnap ice cream in stead.) It was lovely.

Plentiful wine list to choose from as well.

First impression of this restaurant can seem a bit daunting. But once seated, you realize the casual and comfortable attitude of the staff and patrons.

A lovely choice for dinner after a late show in the nearby theatre district.

Restaurants in this city come and go. Something is popular one week and out the next. A handful of restaurants stand the test of time and Zuni is one of them.

It's glass front window looks out on Market Street between the Castro and Van Ness Ave. Looking in, you see the great bar and a lot of great looking people mixing around it. The crowd is pretty hip and being near the Castro they have a strong gay clientele. The restaurant itself consists of a lot of rooms. The main one is off the open kitchen and this is the most desirable room. A few of the rooms upstairs are a bit small - if you want privacy these rooms are wonderful, if want action request a table downstairs. Everything is great here, however I have a favorite dish and even though I want to be adventuresome, I always go back to my old favorite - the roasted stuffed chicken. It's SO delicious and the stuffing is so moist and delicious. I get hungry just writing about it! I barely even look at the menu because the chicken is one of my favorite meals in this city of great eating!

The staff is young and very attentive. I have never had bad service here. Everyone who works here is friendly and seems to enjoy the job. We mostly go for dinner, however I have also had Sunday brunch here, which was equally as good.

Zuni remains tried and true and one of the best places to eat in the city. I can think of a lot flashier places to eat, but I would be hard pressed to find a place that serves a better meal.

We went to the Zuni Cafe for Sunday lunch. Lots of fun. Sat facing the open kitchen and watched the chefs at work. Started with polenta with mascarpone and then had a scrumptious hamburger (with a grilled portobello mushroom on it) on grilled rosemary focaccia bread. Yum!

The much touted Zuni Cafe was worth the trip. After hearing about this on television and purchasing the cookbook, we rode the streetcar to find it for lunch. Very cool restaurant, triangular building built in 1913 at the corner of Market and Rose Alley, with good food. A little pricey but we enjoyed it. The skinny French fries were terrific. Great sandwiches and famous Caesar salad. Now we can say "we've been there"!

Zuni Cafe is a clean, airy restaurant with plenty of windows to prevent claustrophobia amongst the buildings in San Francisco. I’d heard plenty from friends about Zuni Cafe and finally got around to going there for dinner last week with a few friends. I imagine that the weekends are a little more interesting, as there is a piano for live music in the proximity of the bar. More for friendly gatherings than romantic dates, we were able to leisurely enjoy our meal and catch up on our latest goings-on. Fish was a popular choice for our group; quite good and not 'fishy' (I hate fishy-fish). Their thick, crusty bread was fair; it would be far less messy if they supplied bread plates to their patrons. But overall, the meal was satisfying. We shared a nice, warm chocolate cake, but for once I was too full to eat much of it!
