Good Food, Great Atmosphere

My family and I left Austin 8 years ago but every time we visit we have to drop by Threadgill's for the chicken livers, country fried steak, or turkey and dressing. This past weekend we went for brunch. You can either order from the menu or eat off the buffet. The buffet had the usual eggs, bacon, sausage, french toast, pancakes, refried beans, tortillas, grits, gravy, biscuits. The eggs were cold but they had an omelet station and so you could get that hot and fresh (as long as you're patient and wait in line for a few minutes). Even though it was full of families, we were sat quickly. It's one of the best family friendly restaurants in Austin.

I love this place! Tons of atmosphere.

The food is always great and you have enough to take home for lunch the next day. They are famous for chicken-fried steak and lots of side dishes. There are always rolls and cornbread and the tea comes in a Texas-sized glass.

Threadgill's is where I go for a quick fix of fried catfish or meatloaf and I don't want to wait very long. While there are two Threadgill's restaurants in town and the one downtown just south of the river (301 W. Riverside Dr.) is larger and has the occasional live band, true Austinites drive up Lamar to go to the original restaurant. The food is all the same, but in my experience, the wait is always less at the northern location.

If you've never been to Threadgill's, you'll have a hard decision to make: do you get the fried/bronzed catfish or the chicken fried steak? For those vegetarians out there (several of my friends included), Threadgill's offers an awesome five-sides plate which lets you enjoy their absolutely wonderful sides: stewed okra and tomatoes, fried okra, garlic cheese grits, squash cassorole, and broccoli rice cassorole to name just a few.

Sure, I might get a look from the waitress for ordering bronzed catfish, stewed okra, and fried okra but after the first bite, who cares?

One last note: while I'm not a fan, I think everyone should try the fried green tomatoes just once.

I have dined at Threadgills quite frequently and the food has always been great. Threadgills is not much to look at, but the food and history of Threadgills overtakes. From young and old alike, everyone is welcomed.

This simple restaurant was a favorite of Janis Joplin when she lived in Austin. It is also a fav of mine whenever I go home. This is one of the few places in town where you can get a decent order of fried green tomatoes.
