Gourmand

Gourmand is a delightful cafe/coffee-house that every large city should have. Located in the loop, it would be very convenient for office workers. However, it seems to attract an artsy student crowd. The large coffeehouse has plenty of seating, including comfy couches as well as tables. We visited Gourmand three times during our short stay in Chicago.

The service is variable. There is one guy there that consistently forgot or confused our order, and looked very frazzled at the register. Another server became frustrated as we followed a different server's directions for waiting for our food. But at the other times, they were friendly.

The extensive menu features smoothies and coffee drinks, breakfasts, and sandwiches. Their scones are delicious, especially heated up with butter. I really enjoyed their coffee frappes and their fresh fruit smoothies. Breakfasts ranged from healthy yogurt and granola to omelets and egg sandwiches. Portions are quite large.

It is worth noting they also serve beer. As a Massachusetts resident, it simply amazed me that every restaurant and even Osco drug served alcohol.
