Lums, Iguana Cafe

My wife and I decided to stop at this cafe because there was a band playing for tips in the plaza below. We ate the small Conch Salad consisting of onions, peppers, tomatoes, and of course Conch. Conch is a type of shellfish by the way. We washed this down with a cool Kirka Beer, a local brew with an expiration date. If not served by that expiration date it will turn rusty brown, and the beer is bad. Fresh it was very refreshing in the heat.

The only items on the menu that were Bahamian were the Conch Salad and Conch Fritters. Other than that, everything was American, but it looked good.

What made this restaurant a little special was the entertainment and the waitresses. We ate out on the balcony on the Port Prince George side. It was cool and relaxing. The band playing downstairs for tips aided the atmosphere and all was well. Then another Bahamian man showed up and started to dance while holding a cool brew concealed in a bag. Soon another Bahamian man joined him in an identical shirt, and the fun began. Together, these two men began dancing and having a great time. Soon it was nearly impossible not to get into the spirit of the whole thing. A Bahama Mama showed up, deposited a tip in the tip bucket and began to dance also. The next thing we knew the waitresses joined us at the balcony rail. As it turns out they all knew each other. The Band plays there regularly on Tuesday, Friday, and Saturday. The two Bahamian men who joined the fun are a couple of carriage drivers helping the band as they are friends. The Bahama Mama who appeared is known locally, and is a little out of it but loves to dance, and can out dance her younger competition. We were some of the only people who bothered to stop and hear the music, and tip.

Very few other people stoped to notice the cultural activity going on right under the noses. The cruise ship passengers were headed for shopping and nothing was going to stop them. My wife and I bought them a beer, tipped them again, and continued to enjoy.

We had planned to see Fort Fenwyck and the Water Tower. We never made it, choosing instead to remain with this street jam for three hours. We had a blast. I felt so sorry for those cruise passengers who ignored all this to shop for trinkets.

I do have some pictures however to share of this event. Remember the food and service were good, and the price reasonable. It is right next to the Straw Market and Port Prince George. Make sure not to miss it. The people were just too friendly.
