Virgil's Real BBQ

I just love this place - we used to go here all the time. It's located right in the theatre district.

The menu has all types of delicious barbeque dishes and pulled po' boys. The biscuits WERE my favorite with the apple butter spread on top.

Except that my last visit there left me a lasting impression, and I just can't go back. My biscuit had an extra that wasn't on the menu --wink, wink. Needless to say, I haven't gone back.

This probably happens all the time in all the restaurants in NYC and everywhere else for that matter. It just happened to be my time to experience something like that. If you don't have fear, try this restaurant.

How fair am I? I still gave this place a pretty good rating!

On our last trip to NY we discovered Virgil's a southern/barbecue restaurant with a homey atmosphere and extremely good food. The menu offers BBQ style food with all the additions such as buttermilk biscuits and mustard slaw, so if you want to try some real American food and none of that commercial chain 'American' food, this is the place to go. On our first visit we were seated upstairs in the corner, with the large windows offering good views over the streets below and a glimpse of Times Square.

As I said, though, this is not your dumbed down 'American-style' menu, so if you're picky about your food, take a good look at the menu first before deciding to dine there and be sure there's something you like to eat. As for desserts, they are rich and not unlike what you would find in most restaurants - filling, luxuriant and fattening! Plus if your friends ask, they'll stick some candles in it and sing happy birthday to you-very embarassing!.

This is my favorite BBQ restaurant in Manhattan. It's a large a lively two-story restaurant, full of nationwide BBQ artifacts and memorabilia from America's best barbeque joints. There is also a large bar area where people can eat, drink, and watch sports on TV. This meat-eatery haven is a welcome escape just next to the Time Square madness. I like the pulled pork sandwiches, biscuits, cornbread, and also the ribs, but they also have a variety of seafood, burgers, and entrées like Fried Chicken and Chicken Fried Steak.

Virgil's BBQ is an institution in New York City. You will be hard pressed to find even the most pretentious New Yorker who has not been to Virgil's. Though we were in the Big Apple, as soon as we tasted the Carolina pulled pork, we could have sworn we were in the deep South. At one point Emily even let out a rebel yell which, unbelievably, went unnoticed.

Virgil's offers every type of BBQ from pulled pork to ribs. The portions are enormous so be prepared to take home a doggie bag, although we cleaned our plates.

The environment is very casual and the noise level is high. They welcome large groups and are very kid friendly.

We recommend the southern greens and hush puppies. Vegetarian options are clearly identified on the menu. So, strap on the bib, unbutton your trousers, and hold on for a real chow-fest.
