Carmine's

After the Toys 'R' Us sojourn and before we headed over to the Theater for our afternoon Broadway show, the group of us headed over to 44th Street to partake in some delicious Southern Italian cuisine.

Carmine's is located right in the heart of the theater district, walking distance to most of the shows playing in the area. There is a second location in the Upper West Side at 2450 Broadway, between 90th and 91st Streets (212) 362-2200, but I have only frequented the location on 44th Street. This is one of the groups favorite places to go for lunch as the food here is quite yummy, the service is good and the prices reasonable for a large group. Large portions of pastas, antipasti, seafood and meat entrees are served family style and each entree will serve a minimum of 4 normal people.

The atmosphere is lively and noisy, but not so much that you cannot carry on a conversation with the others at your table. As you walk in the single entry doorway, you are greeted by your host or hostess and may be seated on one of two levels. The first level contains both table and booth seating and a large bar runs halfway up one wall with plenty of seating room. Bathrooms are located up one flight of stairs, I believe above the kitchen, so it is always a little toasty up there.

Reservations are recommended and are definitely needed for large groups. We usually go with about 20 people, and the only negative experience I have had here is that the restaurant always splits up our party into two tables of ten and the tables are not near one another. At my last visit, I was told to call and speak to Penny, who handles the private parties and she would be able to help us out with our seating next time, but a fixed menu would be provided, entries to be determined before we arrive.

The food here, as mentioned earlier, is delicious. In my 4-5 times here, we have sampled many of the items on the menu. The stuffed mushrooms are one of my favorite appetizers, meaty and a little tangy. The calimari is always a favorite with our group, although I don't eat seafood, everyone else raved about it. The chicken scarpiello and veal marsala have never disappointed, and the salads are always top-notch. I have never had an entree that we did not enjoy. I recommend that you choose 2-3 dishes for every four to five people, but the wait staff will always tell you what they feel would be best suited for your group. This place is not really geared for parties of less than four people, unless you like to take home LARGE doggie bags.

Meals run about $30-$40 USD per person, with drinks and dessert for parties of our size, but well worth the money for the quality of the food and for being right in midtown tourist area.

Carmine's is best enjoyed with a large group of friends. The portions serve 2 to 4, depending on your appetite. The dining room is large and open, which creates a noisy, vibrant atmosphere.

There is a range of classic Italian fare. The stuffed mushrooms are one of the better appetizers.

The food is pretty good and satisfying. Be prepared for inconsistent service if the wait staff is busy.

If you have a large group in New York, then this is the place to go. This is perhaps one of the best Italian restaurants in New York. It is extremely popular, though, so make sure you make reservations before going. The restaurant is huge and always packed. The menus are largely printed on the walls. Everything is served family-style there. A dish will cost between $20 and $30 dollars but will easily feed four to six people. You get appetizers first with your run-of-the-mill stuffed mushrooms, calamari, salads (you must get the Caeser--it's excellent), and soups.

For dinner, you order a pasta dish or two, a few meat dishes (the chicken piccata is one of my favorites), and some vegetable dishes. All are excellent here.

For dessert, they have a sampler platter filled with fresh seasonal fruit, tiramisu, New York cheesecake, and other wonderful things.

I happened to be with 12 people on this excursion, but if you only have a few people, you won't need to order as much as I did. The service is very friendly, and the restaurant is right next to Times Square, in the middle of all the action. This is a good place.

Carmine’s Restaurant: Outstanding Food

After a Broadway show, head to Carmine’s theater district restaurant for a very satisfying meal. Carmine’s offers a classy, yet relaxed, atmosphere for Italian food in the heart of Time’s Square. Being that Carmine’s is located a few blocks over from the hub of the theater district, it remains unspoiled and is missed by tourists. You will enjoy an authentic NYC meal in a very convenient location to Broadway.

The food is excellent to outstanding in taste and quality. This place is great for couples and even better for large groups or families. Everything on the menu is á la carte. Large groups will enjoy ordering several á la carte entrées and sharing each dish. The first time we were here, we came with a group of 12 people. The favorites of our group were the Porterhouse steak, chicken marsala, penne á la vodka, and eggplant parmesan. For appetizers, the calamari was a favorite, as the tiramisu for dessert. The portions were very generous, and everyone left here feeling very full.

The prices at Carmines match its central location and the caliber of its food. Expect to pay $20 to $30 for each á la carte entrée. For large groups sharing, this works out to be a good deal. Each person from our group paid $50, including drinks from the bar.

For those driving, discount parking with validation is available at Central Parking on 44th Street between 8th and 9th avenues on the south side of the street. Hours are Sunday through Thursday 11:30am until 11pm and Friday and Saturday 11:30am until midnight. For a less crowded atmosphere, eat early (around 5pm), then head to a show. Carmine’s will be the most crowded on weekends after 8pm.

I'm sure there are hundreds of Carmine's recommendations on this website, so I'll keep mine short and hopefully not repetitive.

This family-style restaurant caters to groups of three or more…anything less and it’s not worth going. You'll spend too much and have too much food left over. Not a quiet and romantic place for two!

Make reservations...very important! The food is great and portions are large. Wine is also very good. It’s fast paced and vibrant.

There are two that I know of: one off 44th Street (which is purely touristy) and the one on Broadway all the way up near Central Park - 90th & 91st Streets.

My recommendation is to go up to the 90/91 Streets location; you'll

a) get a reservation
b) get more attention
c) be able to linger without everyone breathing on you.

Favorite Dish:
Everything is my favorite here!!! Can’t go wrong with any dish!
