Great Italian Food

This is an excellent Italian restaurant in NYC. We went on a week night a few weeks before Christmas. We had a 5:30 reservation and it was a good thing because the place was packed and we never would have gotten a table without it. The restaurant was a bit noisy but it was not so noisy that you couldn't hear the people in your party and I think it added to the atmosphere of the restaurant. This is a family style restaurant with the menu on the wall and all entrees feed 2-4 people. When you are seated they give you a basket of different varieties of bread that were delicious. We ordered the calamari for our appetizer. It was a very large portion even for 4 people and was excellent. We also ordered the dinner salad and that was more than enough for 4 people and for our entrees we ordered chicken marsala and chicken parmesan with a side of pasta. With drinks, dessert and tip our bill was just under $200 , which is pretty good for a meal that size in NYC.

Carmine's is a must when you visit New York. It is better with a group of at least 6. I am Italian and very rarely enjoy restaurant Italian food. Carmine's food was as good as my mom's. You order several entrées to share with the group. We all left stuffed. The price was very reasonable for 6 people to share. I recommend the stuffed artichokes - absolutely to die for. We enjoyed everything we ordered from the appetizers to the entrées to the dessert and including the wine.

Be prepared to wait if you don't have reservations, but it's worth the wait. It's a great restaurant for families or big groups. Enjoy!

Carmine’s Restaurant: Outstanding Food

Located at the corner of W. 91st Street and Broadway, Carmine's is a very welcoming restaurant but very busy. We were seated in a small dining room with wood paneling and old family photos on the wall. Most of the tables in this room seated 2 to 4 people. It looked like there was a very large dining room in the back of the restaurant. Meals are served family style and a dish can easily server 3 to 4 people. The food is excellent. Two of us shared one salad (the Caesar has lots of anchovies) and a special combo platter that had a selection of Carmine's favorite pasta dishes. The food is traditional southern Italian and the portions are huge. There were 2 days of leftovers from our meal. Our waiter was delightful. We got there on Sunday about 4 pm without a reservation and were seated at one of the last tables. When we left the bar was full of people waiting for a table. Go with a big appetite and take the kids.

On our first night in NYC, we decided to dine at Carmine's. By the time we got checked into our hotel, it was past lunchtime but not yet dinnertime. However, our group was starving, so we decided to eat a big meal. At 4pm on a Thursday, we got right into Carmine’s but were told they would need the table back by 5:30 for a dinner reservation. The atmosphere was very pleasant. The meals are served family-style and are giant. The menu is a big sign on the wall.

Our group of four started with Carmine’s salad while we decided on our main course. The salad was very large and very good. A bread basket full of different varieties was also served. We decided to order two entrees: cheese ravioli, which was $20, and the vodka penne, at $23. Both were, in our opinions, just above average. One thing I did not like is that there are no free refills on tea or sodas. Our table ordered a pitcher of iced tea for $12, and it was barely enough for us.

I found the waitstaff to be a little rude and standoffish, but then again, they seemed to be busier preparing for the pre-theater rush than tending to us. Would I go there again? Probably not, but everyone should dine at Carmine’s at least once.
