Mars 2112

Think outer-space amusement park. We were greeted by a man in Star-Trekesque costume who led us to the 'ship', (a futuristic elevator thingy), that took us to Mars, (the restaurant). Our five-minute ride was fun. Our 'shuttle' bumped and turned as we watched a film that displayed the 'universe' outside.

Stepping out of the ship and onto the red planet, we dined surrounded by simulated caverns of red. Way-out 'aliens' frequently stopped by the table to express their delight at meeting earth creatures. The menu, a Martian newspaper, was fun to read while we waited for our food.

Although we were reluctant to leave the red planet, we were entertained during our return trip. We stepped onto circles of light and were beamed back up to Earth. It was less dramatic but just as much fun as the trip in.

We stopped by the gift shop and took copies of some of our newly-discovered alien friends home. This is a wonderful place to take children.

On the way out, we saw the President's motorcade. It was the second time we ran across him that day.

This Mars themed restaurant is a great place to take the kids. Enter the main doors and walk to the 'launch pad'. Here you'll be treated to a simulated spaceship ride to the planet Mars, complete with moving seats to maximize the effect. It's actually quite a fun ride and even the adults enjoyed it. As you touch down on the planet and step off your spacecraft you see a huge room filled with rock formations. Look up and see stars twinkling and shooting comets moving along the ceiling. Top 40 music plays in the background and every few hours the 'martians' come out to see the diners! Wonderfully costumed, they come to each table to dance and 'chat' with the children. It's a great photo opportunity! The food is actually not bad considering this is a 'theme' restaurant. The selection is good and it's not just junk food. To complete your experience there's a video game room and a gift shop.

Mars is built to look like the Red Planet. It feels like the bar scene in Star Wars, and, needless to say, my kid LOVES it. Martians serve the food (all with out-of-this-world names) which the restaurant describes as nouveau cuisine. The entrees are good (though pricey), but you don't go to this restaurant for the food on any count. Where else can your child visit another planet? Go to a Juty-Free shop? Find the waiters and waitresses entertaining? It is not hard to make a kid behave when exploring other sections of the universe (and if the kid still kicks your legs under the table, there is a fully stocked bar readily available for war-weary parents to quench their thirst).
