Blast from the Past

You know every time I'm in New York - I make a beeline for 'Ellen's Stardust Diner' where for a Londoner like me - all things American are without doubt the business.

And 'Ellen's' is up there with the best of them. Now I'm English and as the whole world knows us Brits are not thought of as being connoisseurs of fine food. But let me tell you - You would be hard pushed to find a better place to eat then here on Broadway.

For the youngsters there is a train that runs above the head - and for the oldies the walls are lined with the sort of 50's rock n roll memorabilia that could knock you flat on your back.

You may even hear a song or two from the oh so happy and very talented waiting staff. Or watch an old show or film on the giant movie screen while you tuck into a few tasty morsels.

'Ellen's' is not cheap and not dear...It's just right - And eating and having fun what more could you want...I love the place and so will you...Paul Sayce.

Fun Touristy Thing to Do

We've lived in NYC for 15 years and despite walking by Ellen's Stardust probably once a day for a decade, we finally visited recently when my 13 year old cousin was in from town. As a general rule we would not normally patronize any place around Times Square because it would be swamped with tourist and overpriced mediocre food... which is indeed the case here.

However, if you're visiting from out of town and are in the Times Square area anyway, and don't want to pay for and sit through a broadway show, its a great way to get a little taste of the broadway experience while chowing down on some basic diner grub... the atmosphere is fun and social '50s diner themed and would be entertaining for kids of all ages. The wait staff are certainly nice enough, but more interested in the singing and less on the waiting tables part... so service is a bit lacking.

Bottom line: it is what its is which is a fun family friendly "destination restaurent" which caters to tourist doing the "broadway" thing on their trip to the big city... so if that's what you're looking for you found the right place!

Went here and did not want to leave it was a really good night out and cost no more than for instance the Hard Rock Cafe, have come back to London "singing its paises" and have recommended it to my friend's daughter who is going to New York in April can't remember how I found it but what a good find, all you have to do for the entertainment is put a few dollars in their bucket, but that's not compulsory.

Great Dining and Entertainment all in One!

Great Dining and Entertainment all in One!

We are from North Dakota and entertainment is sparse. When I found this diner online, I thought it would be a good place to check out and we were not disappointed at all! The food was basic diner fare, but it was pretty good, and I had the best mudslide. We had wanted to go for breakfast, but we were just a few minutes late, but again, it was a really diverse menu, and I don't think we could have made a bad choice. Just watching the waiter and waitresses do their jobs, and sing, and have so much fun with it made it an excellent dining adventure. If it weren't for the fact we wanted to explore more places, we would have ate every meal there.

Stop in and check it out, even if you just have dessert! You won't regret it.

Ellen's Stardust Diner

OK, Ellen's Stardust Diner is one of those places where you know the food is overpriced and it is pretty corny, but I go back every time I visit with my kids.

Ellen's is on the corner of 51st and Broadway in Times Square. It looks like a 50's diner. I think it might have been a 50's diner. The waiters and waitresses sing. They are all aspiring actors and singers and are usually really good. The last time I went, they sang two of my favorite Broadway songs. They encourage audience participation and donations for the waitstaff (they pass the hat). Little girls will especially like this place (if they like singing). They will also sing to you for your birthday, so you can embarass people this way. They are open from breakfast to dinner. Try it out.
