Description: The dining epicenter of achingly hip Soho, The Mercer Kitchen is fast becoming a downtown institution. I always enjoy an open kitchen where you can see the chefs hard at work creating their masterpieces. The crowd is young, the atmosphere is knowing, and the music is more obtrusive than you probably want for a romantic tete-a-tete. For dinner, the Slowly Roasted Salmon is probably the best I've ever had--impossible tender and succulent. The Black Sea Bass is interesting, but not exceptional, in my opinion. For dessert, the chocolate cake is the thing to get--when your fork breaks open the floury outer shell, there's a sudden rush of warm chocolate onto the plate, which you can swirl around the scoop of vanilla ice cream.
