Gates BBQ

No trip to Kansas City would be complete without a bit of classic Kansas City BBQ, so we're told. Unfortunately for us, our BBQ experience left us disappointed and jaded towards KC BBQ.

Gates BBQ was recommended to us by our taxi driver. Our Californian friends had recommended Jack's Stacks to us, but we figured that the locals would know best. We took our taxi driver's advice and headed over our first night in Kansas City to Gate's BBQ.

Also per our driver's recommendations, we ordered the small party platter meant for three to four people(about $25), a huge plate of ribs, ham, turkey, and pickles atop a layer of sliced bread, all smothered with BBQ sauce. We also ordered a Burnt Ends Sandwich.

The food was absolutely mediocre. Everything was way too salty. The ribs and ham were rather dry. While they had three varieties of barbecue sauce, none tasted any better than the BBQ sauce I could pick up from the local grocery store.

The Burnt Ends Sandwich was different, as we'd never had one before but had heard about them. It was pretty fatty, but it was a good change from the rest of the food, as it was actually moist in comparison.

While I understand that it is just a barbecue joint, the ambience of the restaurant was also poor. While it was large and there were plenty of tables, it seemed dark. It felt more like a pool hall than anything else.

They did call a taxi for us, which was very nice of them.

I'm sure that Kansas City BBQ is great. Maybe we have California taste buds and aren't used to Kansas City BBQ, but I think it's more likely that Gate's BBQ is just a mediocre establishment with poor BBQ.

As you walk in the door of Kansas City's most famous barbecue chain, you'll be greeted by chants of "what may I get you?" The Gates' greeting may seem rude to some, but it is a gesture of a longstanding sense of community and appreciation of their customers.

The first time visitor to any of the Kansas City locations will find a menu list that may very well seem overwhelming. Ranging from pork barbecue on a bun to sides of ribs, nothing at Gates' can be considered a poor choice. The barbecue is smothered in the world famous Gates' sauce and the meat is so tender and flavorful that it literally falls off the bone. For those looking for a spicy flavor, Gates' hot sauce has won many an international competition and they feel so strongly about their food and their sauce that they mail order both around the country and the sauce can be found in any grocery store in the Kansas City area. Although a bit pricier than many of the other area barbecue establishments, once you've had Gates you'll never settle again for any of the second bests that may be found throughout this city known for barbecue.

You simply haven’t lived until you eat BBQ at Gates. Their extra hot sauce holds the title 'Best Barbecue Sauce on the Planet, 1991.' Eating at Gates is a KC experience everyone should have. It’s one of the first places I visit when I come to town.

When you first walk in, you'll be greeted with 'Hi, may I help you?' It doesn't mean you have to order right away. It's their famous way of acknowledging you. The bar-b-q sandwiches here are out of this world. The sauce is authentic Kansas City. For a true KC experience, eat here.
