There must be something in the water in Venice. Otherwise there is no way we would ever have dared go into this restaurant in the first place - there's something about it that exudes the "you have to be very rich or very important to be allowed through the door." However, we went temporarily insane and booked for that evening as we wandered past the door.
Walking in, we found ourselves in an accurate mock up of the dining carriage of the Orient Express. Sadly, we were led through this, to the second room of the restaurant, which is quite rustic in style. We were seated at a table set with linen table cloths and solid silver platters. We were offered a menu in a choice of as any languages as I've actually heard of, by waiters speaking perfect English. Whilst considering the enormous selection of food, we were brought Belinnis - these are apparently covered by the service charge and were beautiful.
The menu features a large selection of fish, seafood, shellfish, etc, although there was also a reasonable selection of non-fishy treats! Thankfully we're both fish lovers, and went for the mixed grilled fish, which has to be shared by at least two people, after varied starters. Be warned that this is likely to be a t-total dining experience unless you are absolutely minted - the wine list included bottles at 1,500 Euros!
The main course turned out to be an absolute dream. We were presented with five different types of grilled fish, including squid, giant scampi, and trout, and two others that the waiter didn't seem to have a translation for - apparently the selection depends entirely upon what's freshest at the market that day. All of these were beautifully prepared and tasted superb.
After two courses, we were utterly full, and declined desert. Whilst waiting for the bill, we were presented with an enormous plate of Venetian biscuits to while away the time - again, covered by the cover charge.
All the food was served with full silver service, was beautifully prepared, and overall a real experience. Yes, it was expensive, but once we'd braved the scary doorman, we weren't made to feel out of place for not being stinking rich or obscenely famous. A really special meal in beautiful surroundings.
