A Poor Ambassador for Prague

As guests of T&M Cross we shared the same miserable experience. Never again. We had better service from more polite people in some of the smaller eating houses. It was the one event that marred our visit to this beautiful city.

Avoid at All Costs

Went in 2007 after recommendation from friends, suberb evening, fine dining and excellent service. Went two weeks ago, service appalling, only four tables occupied on terrace, fine dining room empty! very 'cocky' overfamiliar waiter who greeted us with the words ' the more money you pay the less food you get so I suggest you order all three courses! I requested black pepper with the first course which arrived when we had finished. Main course arrived and after several minutes I had to enter the building and look for some cutlery to eat it with! We requested brandies after dinner, there was a choice of 1, £8-00 a glass which was then served in cold whisky tumblers. This was followed by a request for cigars, 'we only have 2 cigars and I don't know how old they are'. This pales into insignificance when we placed the money for the evening inside the billfold including a 279kr tip [ small but representing the poor service] only for the waiter to return several minutes later to say there was a shortfall of 500kr. We requested to speak to the Matre De who in fact turned out to be the waiter!!!
We payed up and left. On returning to the UK we e-mailed the owner to share our very disappointing experience, he in return has offered us a voucher for a bottle of champagne next time we eat there, there will never be a next time. One positive, the food was very good but to us a fine dining experience encompasses more than just what you eat. Speak as you find.

One of Prague's Hidden Jewels...

Off the beaten path below Castle Prague you will find this gem of a restaurant. You can tell that it is a classy restaurant by the clientele: unassuming but moneyed locals or business travelers.
Dress code seemed to be business casual. I wouldn't recommend wearing jeans.
The menu offerings along with the winelist were superb.
Ask for a table out on the terrace...fabulous!

Palffy Palac

We had Saturday night dinner here. We all dressed up a little and wandered there in a leisurely fashion. The receptionist's booking had been confused with the night before, but they put us in the bar, served us free fizz, and quietly and efficiently sorted it out.

It's a beautiful room: chandeliers, mood lighting, linen, and crystal. I was glad we'd dressed for dinner - all the locals had - it was only tourists that hadn't bothered, so at least we fitted in rather than standing out.

My meal was the "roast scallops served with Chinese radish, pomegranate, and tiger prawns," "chicken breast served with roasted baby carrots, walnuts, and wine Grapes," and a good local red wine, all topped off with "chocolate sorbet with fresh strawberries," fizz, coffee, and chocolates.

It was all done immaculately, with professional service, and all still reasonable compared to U.K. prices for the same standard.

Palffy Palac

The Palffy Palac is located on the first floor of an old music school. The first time we came here my stomach sank as I realized that I was so underdressed. The saving grace was that the date and time of our appointment were midweek and early respectively. A tie is not required but a jacket and smart collared shirt are recommended. What a great place this is all year round but especially in the summer. It has a large lounge, a small lounge and an outside terrace. Live piano often accompanies the late diners. Celebrities mix with the people, the atmosphere is thick with discussion and conversation punctuated by a raised fork and the clink of glasses. We have returned several times.

The Menu
With starters like "Marinated shrimps in cognac served with tropical fruit" and "Duck liver Foie Gras served with baked puff pastry and caramelized oranges" you know the chef is going to blow your mind. Main courses like "French baby chicken filled with chestnut stuffing served with port wine sauce" or "Grilled Sea Bass served with caviar sauce" will leave you struggling to eat a dessert although they are tempting. Greatt setting for a couple on a special night out. I cannot recommend this place highly enough outside on the terrace on a hazy summer's night. Perfect.
