Cabbages & Condoms

Cabbages & Condoms is off the main street. A free vasectomy from the clinic next door is available for the male diners, and proceeds go to Population and Community Development Association (PDA), a non-profit organization founded in 1974 that tries to make condoms as common as cabbages (a common staple of Thailand).

Once seated, it was a while before our server took our order. There are fruit drinks available. The service was slow on the uptake, taking perhaps 10 to 15 minutes. The quality of the foods we tried was very high. Condoms are given out at the end of the meal instead of breath mints.

On another visit, we ordered deep-fried crab rolls with minced shrimp and minced water chestnuts THB 150 were good, the pan-fried salmon with payaya salad THB 300 was alright, the steamed whole sea bass THB 300, a popular dish wasn't to my taste, the service wasn't nearly as good. They served the fish with a heat source underneath with the idea of keeping the fish hot while you consume it, I don't care for this practice as the fish is overcooked.

There's a gift shop there if you feel inclined to buy something there. There wasn't anything I saw there that I really had to have. The Rubber Tree Lounge is open till 1am and offers free Internet with 3 stations or wi-fi with your own laptop.

There's another restaurant in Chiang Mai and a resort in Pattaya, both seemed more out of the way than the Bangkok location.

Hours: 11am-10pm. Credit cards accepted. Email: cabconpattaya@pda.or.th or hukwang@ptty2.loxinfo.co.th

A trip to Bangkok would not be complete without a night at Cabbages and Condoms!

No--its not some weird, kinky sex restaurant--the owner is a champion of AIDS prevention in Thailand and proceeds of the restaurant go towards the cause.

The restaurant is not that cheap but is worth it for the experience--the entire restaurant is filled with condoms and condom paraphernalia and is actually quite interesting once you get past the table tops which are topped with glass, under which are hundreds of colored condoms!

The nicest place to sit is outside in the garden area which has vines falling from high above which are covered in tiny fairy lights.

The food is excellent and the menu includes a Spicy Condom Salad. There is also a gift shop which has heaps of unique gifts to bring back for your friends and family.

The sign at the exit sums up the atmosphere at the restaurant:

'Sorry, we have no mints. Please take a condom instead' (condoms are provided in 2 sizes--German and Brazilian. I'll leave it up to you to work out the difference!)

The women I travelled with and I returned to Bangkok from Phuket the day before the guys did and decided to scout this place out for dinner the next night. It seemed OK, but not great. I was amazed at how different it looks at night.

The restaurant has a tree-lined courtyard, lit at night by softly glowing lamps. The trees form a canopy under which you walk along a wooden path into a building along the lines of a traditional Thai merchant house. On entering, you are given a choice between air conditioning or not. If you can stand it, you're probably better off staying out of the AC -- it will allow you to adapt to the heat better. There is a gift shop with a variety of items (not all of them condoms or even necessarily sex-related!) where we spent a fun 15 minutes on the way out. But first, to dinner.

There were six of us. We ordered about 10 dishes among us -- five appetizers and five main courses, along with rice and bottles of water. The total bill came to about $40 or so. Among our favorite dishes were chicken wrapped in banana leaves, spicy Chicken Panang (a curry with coconut milk and basil) and a whole fish baked with ginger and lemongrass. We ate it right down to the meat in the fish's cheeks!

We skipped dessert (to be honest, we pretty much skipped desserts the whole time -- they never seemed too appealing), but did have some delicious Thai coffee. Made with evaporated milk, Thai coffee is thick and sweet and almost a dessert in itself.

The servers were attentive without being intrusive. Glasses were kept filled with water, plates were brought and cleared at a pace that never made us feel rushed but also didn't leave us feeling like we'd been sitting forever -- except that it took about 10 minutes to get someone to take our order for drinks when we first sat down.

It was probably the second best meal I ate in Bangkok. If I can remember the name of what I thought was best, I'll post it. It's a cooking school/restaurant on the second floor above a grocery store directly across the street from the entrance to the Amari Boulevard -- awesome Tom Kah Gai (a spicy chicken and coconut milk soup)!

The name itself gets your attention immediately. Located slightly on the inside of the road, it's not that easy to find so be sure to get the address right. But once you get there, you won't be dissapointed; it has a nice ambiance and quite a large dining area. And to add on to that, they serve wonderful Thai food that is simply delicious. Try the fried fish with thai sauce and shrimp. Basically, it's all good; give it a try and let your senses tell you.

Cabbages & Condoms

A friend referred me to this resturant by asking me to pick up more vases and flowers for her. She had been here several months earlier and was impressed. The resturant is well marked even with a sign out on Sukamvit up above your head on a light pole. There is a Vasectomy Clinic on the street just before you arrive. There are actually 2 eating locals, one indoor if the weather is too muggy for you or in the evening there are a miriad of white lights strung in the trees for an alfresco experience. The meal I chose was a steamed white fish with steamed rice and was very delicious. The vegetables atop the fish were very spicy so they can be pushed aside if your palate is less accustommed to the spice. As you dine outdoors, you will notice the roosters walking about strutting their stuff. For entertainment, toss a few grains of rice to the cobbled patio.

They take the standard credit cards and don't drop your teeth as you receive your receipt. Instead of a mint, you will be presented with a foil wrapped condom. All in keeping with the education of AIDS/HIV awareness and education. Toward the back near the restrooms there is a center where they hold classes on the transmission/prevention of the HIV virus.

The gift shop on the premises will provide you with some unique souveniers that will amaze your friends back home.
