Cabbages and Condoms

Don't be misled by the restaurant's odd name or put off by the array of contraceptive devices for sale. This very popular place raises funds for the Population & Community Development Association, the country's family planning program. The complex is a restaurant, bar, internet café, massage shop, and gift shop all rolled into one. It is a ‘must-go’ place.

Arriving recently with friends, we were all so impressed by the decor. Most prominent were the tens of thousands of white fairy lights draped from the canopies, fluttering in the night breeze. There were plenty of candles too, and the sounds of hundreds of diners chattering, punctuated by noisy sizzling dishes wafting a great aroma into the night air. I spotted as many Thai couples/groups as I did Westerners.

Set in a large compound, the two-story restaurant has an air-conditioned indoor dining area-- but if you sit on the garden terrace, you're in a fairyland of twinkling lights which is quite romantic. Have a look round. There are condoms everywhere, in frames on the walls, and under glass tabletops. So many colours, so many patterns, ribbed, studded, and then some plain huge ones.

Business at the bustling downtown eatery is clearly excellent. While most people probably go for the novelty value the first time, they come back for the food. This has been consistently rated one of the best restaurants in Bangkok. You'll find the food here excellently prepared and presented. Every dish arrives ornately dressed with some amazing garnishes such as flower-shaped carrots.

Here are some of my recommended dishes:
Vegetarian – green curry with tofu and vegetables (Bt120)
Appetizers – Thung Thong, deep fried chicken and mushroom in flour (Bt100)
Soup – Gang Leang Noppokao, vegetables with shrimp in spicy shrimp paste (Bt180)
Curry – Hor Moke Taley, steamed seafood with coconut and vegetables in banana leaf (Bt 200)
Mains – Pla ka Pong Nueng ma Nao, steamed whole seabass with chili, lemons, and vegetables (bt350)
Dessert – Mango and sweet rice (Bt90).
Fruit juice is 80 Baht a glass and beer 90 Baht a small bottle.

All diners get a condom with coffee, instead of an after-dinner mint. You might also want to have a Thai foot massage (15 minutes for 60Baht), use the internet or have a quiet drink in the Captain Condom lounge.

Before you leave, be sure to check out the gift shop's whimsical condom-related merchandise. Piles of T-shirts are emblazoned with the message, "Cabbages and Condoms, Our food is guaranteed not to cause pregnancy." Proceeds from the sale of these items and the restaurant’s meals are given to the Population and Community Development Association, a non-profit organization founded in 1974 by the very popular Mechai Viravaidya, the former Thai Minister of Health.

Mechai has an aim. He wants to make condoms as common--and as accepted--as cabbages. The restaurant is doing just that while providing a unique experience to all visitors. The restaurant opens from 11am.

Cabbages and Condoms

Ironically enough the restaurant "Cabbages and Condoms"; dedicated to HIV and AIDS awareness is located in the Sukhumvit area which had more signs of the ‘bought’ women than the previously visited Khao San road area.

Their catch phrase is "Our food is guaranteed not to make you pregnant". After dinner watch for the offering of a wrapped condom with your coffee rather than the traditional mint.

Despite all the kitsch; this restaurant does have a very serious nature. Proceeds from the food and the adjacent gift shop are given to the Population and Community Development Association, a non profit organization.

The restaurant itself is beautiful, lit with fairy lights and offering an indoor dining area as well as outdoor. The food was wonderful though more high scale (and higher prices) than other restaurants we chose. Well not expensive by US standards but expensive compared to the casual places around Khao San Road.

The ambience, the tasty food, the good cause all make it worth shelling out a few extra dollars for an interesting experience.

Cabbages & Condoms

Because Thailand is experiencing a threat with its high statistics of AIDS cases, this restaurant is offering not only great-tasting Thai food but is also advocating safe sex, thus the name Cabbages and Condoms. There are different souvenir items at the entrance of the restaurant, some of which are shaped as condoms.

The food is excellent and many tourists come here to partake of their delicious offering. There are air-conditioned rooms, but there are also outdoor dining areas that have a cozy atmosphere. My friends and I opted for the area in the open air on the second floor, beneath a large tree with Christmas lights hanging from the branches. I ordered a delicious Thai fish soup and fresh coconut juice.

Cabbages & Condoms

Thailand is a very beautiful country, the "land of smiles", but it has many problems that sit beneath the surface. Drug trading, child prostitution, economic downturn, and political corruption are very real to the Thai people, but what they try so hard to conceal it from tourists who are sheltered in cozy resorts on its south coastline. What I liked best about this restaurant was not that the proceeds go to a worthy cause, but simply that it raises awareness in a silent society.

The white-linen tablecloth restaurant was gorgeous when we visited. We sat outside on in a tree-lined grove lit by candles and Christmas lights. Waterfalls and flowers added to the illusion of being tucked away from the city. The menu at Cabbages and Condoms offered specialties as well as quintessential Thai dishes of high quality. The fruity drinks and desserts we tried we especially good. Even though much of the menu is available from street vendors for a fraction of the cost, the proceeds from the restaurant go to educate those same Thais about AIDS and other STDs, sexual activity, birth control and other subjects that have been taboo for so long.

After a satisfying meal, we stopped in a the giftshop, which was an adventure enough in itself. The proprieters offer a wide selection of what you might call "specialty" gifts - bouquets of condoms, mugs, t-shirts, and books about condoms, and free handouts of condoms (which come with the meal instead of after dinner mints). If this would be considered a theme restaurant, it was very tactfully done, a unique but quality experience.

Cabbages & Condoms

Affiliated to the Population and Community Development Association, Cabbages and Condoms offers a unique dining experience whether you choose to eat indoors or outside under the trees illuminated by thousands of tiny fairy lights.

The setting is not the only thing which is breathtaking here -- the meals are always cooked to perfection and the service is prompt and cheerful on even the busiest night! Why not try the Pad Thai Noodles with Chicken Wrapped in Pandanas Leaves served with an ice cold Singha Beer - to finish perhaps a Thai Whiskey and Cola.

The choice is yours, though I am sure whatever you choose an evening at C and C will be one of those lasting memories you will always treasure.

For a bit of fun after your meal, check out the PCDA gift shop located at the front of the restaurant. Here you will see condoms used in ways you never thought possible. A great place to purchase that little something for the friend who has everything.
